Category I Request to Change

the AREC Degree Program

Name of Institution: Oregon State University

Name of Proposing College(s): College of Agricultural Sciences

Name of Proposing Department(s): Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics

1.            Title of the proposed instructional, research, or public service unit. For name changes, give both the current and proposed names, and reasons for the proposed change.

Current Degree Name: Agricultural and Resource Economics (BS)

Proposed Degree Name: Environmental Economics, Policy and Management (BS)

Reasons for change: Currently, the Environmental Economics, Policy and Management option is offered as part of the degree in Agricultural and Resource Economics.  Because virtually all students in the degree programs are also selecting this option, it seemed appropriate to raise the option to degree status and do away with the current Agricultural and Resource Economics degree name.

2.            Location within the institution's organizational structure

The current and proposed degree are administered by the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics.

3.            Objectives, functions (e.g., instruction, research, public service), and activities of the proposed unit.

The department has responsibilities in undergraduate and graduate instruction, research and extension.

4.            Resources needed, if any:

None, because there are no changes in course requirements and so forth.

5.       Funding requirements(estimated annual budget), and sources thereof: state sources (institutional funds - state general fund, tuition and fees, indirect cost recoveries), federal funds, other funds as specified.

Funding requirements will not change as a result of the degree name change.

6.       Relationship of the proposed unit to the institutional mission.

Not applicable to this proposal.

7.       Long-range goals and plans for the unit (including a statement as to anticipated funding sources for any projected growth in funding needs).

The option in Environmental Economics, Policy and Management was first offered at OSU in 1997.  Interest in the program has grown rapidly since then and the option now has about 30 students enrolled.  The department expects growth to continue for the next several years, perhaps reaching as many as 100 students.  Current resources are sufficient to handle another 20 or so students in this major.  At that point further resources will be needed from the College of Agricultural Sciences.

8.       Relationship of the proposed unit to programs at other institutions in the state.

The program is the only one of its kind offered in the state.

9.       Purpose for a proposed change

See question #1 above
