Students may be admitted to the University under the following categories:
Regular Graduate Students
Students who have been fully accepted by the University and by a major department to work toward an advanced degree.
Academic Conditional Admission
Students who have not met the formal admission requirements (GPA below 3.0) but whose accomplishments have convinced the University Graduate Admissions Committee and their major departments that they have potential for success as advanced-degree candidates may be conditionally admitted as follows:
Students conditionally admitted must satisfactorly complete a specified number of graduate-level hours with a GPA of 3.0 or above.
Students from nonaccredited institutions must complete at least one term of satisfactory work at Oregon State, after which they may be admitted with full standing to the University.
Language Conditional Admission
International students who otherwise have met all formal admission requirements but whose language score is in the conditional range may be conditionally admitted. See English Language Proficiency.
Provisional Admission
Students who have met all University standards for formal admission but whose academic program or major department may have placed additional restrictions upon their admission may be provisionally admitted. These restrictions may include certain prerequisite courses that must be completed, completion of the GRE or GMAT, submission of additional reference letters or scores, or other provisions set by a University unit. Provisionally admitted students cannot take the final exam for their degree until they have satisfied their provisions and been reclassified as regular graduate students.
Credit will be allowed for graduate courses that students complete acceptably while registered as conditional or provisional students.
Students who fail to satisfactorily complete stated conditions or provisions will be dismissed from the University.
Re-enrollment
The Oregon State University Graduate School has a continuous enrollment policy. For more information see the Graduate School Catalog. Students who withdraw from the University must apply for readmission if they wish to return after an absence. Even if a student withdraws in good standing, readmission to a graduate program is not guaranteed.
