What is START?
START is the academic advising and registration process for fully admitted degree-seeking undergraduate students starting classes in fall term. You must be a fully admitted, degree-seeking F-1 or J-1 visa holder to participate in online START.
If you're starting at OSU in winter, spring or summer term, or are starting an INTO OSU program, your advising and registration will be included in your New International Student Orientation.
Preparing for START
Before START, you should submit your Intent to Attend.
There are three ways you can complete START:
- On-campus - Click here for fall 2014 START dates
If you are in the US during the summer before your fall term start, please sign up for an on-campus START session. Spaces are limited, so signing up early is best.
- Online - Available until August 27, 2014
If you are currently outside the US and won't be in the US for on-campus START, you can complete START online. Online START includes a tutorial on how to complete the process followed by an advising session with your major academic advisor. No sign-up is needed.
Upon completion of START, your academic advisor will give you instructions on how to register for classes and provide you with a Personal ID Number (PIN) to complete early registration for classes. This process may take 2-4 weeks.
- You can also complete START during New International Student Orientation. If you arrive on campus for Orientation, START advising and registration will automatically be included in your orientation schedule.
Conditionally-admitted students do not participate in START
If you've submitted a TOEFL score of 60-69 or an IELTS score of 5.5-6.0, you will not participate in START. Instead, you'll participate in CAP Student Orientation on the Friday before regular International Student Orientation begins.
If you've been conditionally-admitted WITHOUT an English language score, or with English language scores below those listed above, you won't do START. You will attend New International Student Orientation. See Dates for when your orientation will begin.
