Last Saturday the club level of Resser stadium was once again filled with the yells of victory and defeat. Instead of fans carrying in OSU Chainsaws, sweatshirts and Elvis Costumes; the students of OSU and the community had monitors, hard drives, and even a few Xbox 360s. Yes once again it was the OSU UO Civil War LAN. For those of you who are less tech savvy a LAN is a Local Area Network and they are used when a multitude of gamers wish to play the same game at the same time and only want to play against other players in the LAN.
Walking into Resser during a LAN is like nothing I have ever seen before. At least 24 tables are in the center of the club level and six players sit on each table. Computer sizes vary as much as the gamers themselves. The bar served drinks all night long, with pizza for dinner, muffins in the morning, and chipotle for lunch. Over in the two corners sat the Xbox 360s. Even though there were less Xbox 360 players the yells from the corners were just as impressive as the yells from the PCs.
At the club level there were over 200 gamers who arrived to play for the OSU team. The LAN tournament was subdivided into two groups: Consoles and PCs. The console portion consisted of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 from midnight until six am, then Street Fighter from six am until noon, and then finally Halo 3 from noon until four. The winners of each console tournament played another team back in Eugene. Because I am a console gamer I cannot say when each compute game was played though I know that they did play: HON, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Counter Strike Source, Team Fortress 2 and a few others that I did not recognize.
As the tournament progressed on through the night and the following afternoon players came and went yet we all came back for two things, the food and the raffle. The raffle was the culmination of the LAN tournament with prizes from graphic cards to bobble heads, from a new Xbox 360 to the beautiful Alienware headphones. In the end OSU won most of the console trophies and a majority of the computer trophies. Though this was only the second tournament between OSU and UO it seems that it is easily becoming a long lasting tradition with no signs of going away.

In an accompanying article, Berenise Delgado, a valedictorian from Roosevelt High School in Portland, talks of her dream to attend OSU to be an engineer but the challenges of affording that dream. Oregon State’s ‘Bridge to Success‘ program is designed for those in state students who struggle with college costs.

From the article:

If she has to, she says, she’ll try to take out loans. “Whatever it takes, I’m going to college.”

Late last week, Delgado learned that she’s been awarded a series of grants and scholarships that will allow her to attend Oregon State and even cover the cost of books.

“I’m ready,” she says after looking over the paperwork.

Well folks, it’s Civil War week! There is a ton of good will around the country directed towards the Beavers. Our guys and their run to Rose Bowl has garnered a good bit of attention. Governor Kulongoski who attended University of Missouri has declared his allegiances:

Gov. Ted Kulongoski tipped his hand today on which team he wants to win Saturday’s “Civil War” football game between the University of Oregon Ducks and the Oregon State University Beavers.
Color him black and orange.
“The Ducks won’t go to the Rose Bowl if they win,” the governor said. “I want the Beavers to go to the Rose Bowl.”
Kulongoski, a graduate of the University of Missouri, typically stays as neutral as possible in public on cross-state rivalries. Not this time.
“I’m all for the Roses,” Kulongoski said.

The Civil War is a special time in Oregon. We only have one pro team (the Trailblazers) in the state so the Division I college teams are the focus of a lot of attention. Everyone in Oregon, even those who didn’t attend OSU or UO, has an allegiance of some sort…Even the Governor.

We’ll try and check in later with some Civil War fun!

(note: the presence of roses in this post in no way is intended as a guarantee or any other offense that would result in the jinxing of my beloved Beavers. They are merely representative of the Governor’s desire to see the Beavers in the Rose Bowl…So, if the Beavers lose this Saturday, blame the governor)

GO BEAVS!
