Best Colleges Online recently released their list of the top ten Most Bike Friendly Campuses Across America. OSU made it at number nine on the list. There are many resources and programs on campus that have led to this ranking. Students have access to used bikes for sale on campus through surplus, at Dixon Recreation students can access free bike repair, and around campus there is plenty of lockers for storage. The rankings stated that:

Oregon State University’s status as a bike friendly university has a lot to do with its home, the city of Corvallis. This college town is known as one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in America, second only to Davis, Calif. The city has an astonishing bike lane infrastructure: 97% of its streets have bike lanes, and by percentage, more people take trips by bike in Corvallis than any other Oregon city. It’s no wonder that this culture has spread to OSU, with 30% of students biking to campus.

So for all the new students coming to campus this fall, you might want to bring you bike along!

Summer Break is close by and many people are beginning to pack their summer vacation suitcases. If you are going to be traveling to our Nations Capital this summer or live near the area, OSU will be participating in the Smithsonian’s Folklife Festival June 27th-July 8th. This is a great opportunity to showcase some of the great research that goes on at Oregon State University.

Folklife Festival Exhibitions on the Mall
Happening daily 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

June 27 through July 1
July 4 through July 8

OSU Exhibitions
Displayed under tents every day on the dates listed above. We will be in the “Sustainable Solutions” sections.

Surimi School (located in the main exhibit area) Internationally recognized surimi expert Dr. Jae Park and his OSU Seafood Laboratory team will present the historic origins of the versatile fish paste and how surimi products have created a $2.1 billion industry in the United State over the past 30 years with major growth ahead. Within that, they’ll note OSU’s singular role in the “Americanization of surimi.” (Learn more about Surimi School)

Tech Wizards (located in the USDA 4H area) Octaviano Merecias-Cuevas and others with the nationally recognized 4H program will be leading Folklife participants through the process of building robots. A bilingual after-school program that teaches technological skills to low-income, marginalized youth ages 8 through 18, Tech Wizards is now active at more than 100 sites around the U.S.

Making Waves (located in the main exhibit area) The O.H. Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory will show how scientists and engineers are learning how wave action affects our coastal areas, helping us better prepare for tsunamis and hurricane waves. They’ll be working with one of Hinsdale’s mini-flumes, crashing waves over models of coastal structures created by Folklife attendees.

Other OSU Presenters
Happening on the Mini-University/Discussions Stage

The OSU Folklife Committee has put forward a list of OSU and OSU Extension faculty members as potential presenters in the Smithsonian “Mini-University” area. Faculty in this area will be making 15-minute presentations on a wide range of topics throughout the Festival. We’ll provide additional detail on who the Smithsonian curatorial staff has selected as soon as that information is available.

Happy Traveling this Summer!

Engineering students at OSU had the opportunity to showcase a lot of the projects and research that goes on in our College of Engineering last Friday. There were more than 100 student built programs and each specialization was proudly represented. This event was open to the public and free. Along with the showcase of projects, a Robo*Palooza was also held during the expo and featured the award winning Mars rover robot and FIRST robots from local high schools. Tours of the O.H Hinsdale Wave Lab were also available to the public. Last year a boat made out of concrete was presented, it was build and raced by OSU engineering students. Also the formula 1 racing team was out talking to people about the research put into the car and team.

This is an annual event, if you missed it this year and are wanting to learn more about the College of Engineering I have included a link below. We offer a tour daily at 2pm M-F that focuses just on the many research opportunities that the College of Engineering has to offer students, if you are interested the 2nd link below will take you to our visit OSU page.

OSU has been committed to be active stewards of the planet through sustainable practices for countless years. One such practice happens right here in the Office of Admissions by printing materials in an environmentally responsible fashion. For several years, the Office of Admissions has been printing materials on FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) approved methods with the paper product coming from 30% recycled materials. By using these types of printing methods our office could actually be helping to maintain the forests.

The next time you receive admissions information on paper, just look for the FSC seal of approval and know OSU is dedicated to environmental efforts.

The Princeton Review partnered with the U.S. Green Building Council and released their third annual edition of a guidebook showcasing North America’s most environmentally responsible “green colleges.” The list profiles 322 different schools in the United States and Canada “that demonstrate notable commitments to sustainability in their academic offerings, campus infrastructure, activities and career preparation.”

Schools were chosen based on a survey that was conducted in 2011 to hundreds of colleges across the U.S. and Canada. The survey asked more than fifty questions about the institution’s sustainability-related policies, practices, and programs. Of the 768 institutions that received a Green Rating, only 322 of the schools received a score of 83 or above.

College applicants using this free, 232 page, guide will be able to view each school’s most impressive environmental and sustainable initiatives, view facts and statistics, and identify schools with LEED-certified buildings. Of course the applicants will also be able to view each school’s admission, financial aid, and student enrollment information.

The Princeton Review just came out with its annual list of the greenest colleges in America, and OSU was among the top 16 green universities in the country! OSU received the highest ranking possible from the Princeton Review. This recognition is due to the high recycling efforts on campus, student involvement in sustainability, and the large amount of green energy purchased.

”Student involvement on sustainability issues is high on campus and that is one of the things the makers of the ranking probably looked at,” said Brandon Trelstad, OSU’s sustainability coordinator. “We are doing a lot here in terms of buying green energy,” said Trelstad. “Also, 35 percent of the food budget is spent on purchasing local and organic food in the dining halls.”

This ranking is among many that OSU continues to receive for its sustainability efforts. For OSU being ‘green’ is no passing fad. The dedication to sustainability is seen throughout campus, and we continue to be on the cutting edge of sustainability efforts. Come visit OSU and check it out for yourself!
