The keynote speaker was Ariko Iso, the head football trainer at Oregon State University. She gave a very inspirational talk about her life and her journey from Tokyo to OSU, to San Jose State University, to Portland State University, to the Pittsburgh Steelers and back to OSU in 2011. She has been the ONLY female head athletic trainer in the NFL, but that was not her original goal. She wanted to be a trainer in the National Basketball Association (NBA), but she is grateful where her life’s work has taken her and she enjoys going to work every day. Ariko says she has been fortunate to have gone to 8 NFL playoff games and 3 Super Bowls. She was never intimidated by super star athletes, since she didn’t know who they were as she worked 6 days a week and didn’t spend Sundays watching NFL games. One of the coaches told her that everyone’s elbows and knees are still just elbows and knees, no matter who’s body they are on. She never thought that being Asian or female hindered her employment possibilities since she just wanted to be known as an athletic trainer. She reminded the graduates that you need to love what you are doing, that you take one day at a time, and her motto is, “work hard and play hard”. Several of the seniors spoke to Ariko at the end of the evening since many of them are athletes and want to go into health related or physical therapy occupations.

Beaver Nation get ready! It’s time once again for the Annual Civil War Football Game. Every November both Oregon State University and University of Oregon battle head-to-head during the Civil War game. This year the war will be fought on November 26, 2011 in the Ducks homeland of Eugene, OR. However, there is another Civil War currently going on between the Beavers and the Ducks that actually saves lives: The Civil War Blood Drive! This year marks the 10th anniversary for the Civil War Blood Drive. The Ducks won last year, but you can help the Beavers bring the Civil War trophy back to Corvallis. The only way to score points for our team is by donating blood. If you are not eligible to donate blood, please consider recruiting someone to give in your place. Every vote counts!

When you schedule a donation, please be sure to say it is on behalf of the Beavers. You can do this at any blood drive in the State of Oregon, from November 3-19. In addition to helping OSU win the competition, you’ll be helping to save lives!

All participants may enter a drawing to win one of several pairs of Civil War football game tickets, a $100 certificate to the Beavers or Ducks store, or a Civil War party package. Winning is possible! Our current score is OSU 2763 vs UO 2682. To schedule your appointment and help save lives, call the American Red Cross at 1-800-RED CROSS. For more information, visit CivilWarBloodDrive.com.

Go Beavs!

A great story came across the wire this morning about The Oregon State University Marching Band’s new Feature Twirler, Kailey Taylor, from Hesperia, CA

From the Hesperia Star:

Her phenomenal baton twirling skills have won her school talent shows, put her atop regional and state baton competitions and provided an opportunity to travel outside the U.S. Next fall, Kailey Taylor’s ability to twirl as many as four batons at a time will help her get into the college of her choice, Oregon State University.

The school was so impressed with the Sultana High senior’s abilities that they gave her a scholarship and named her their feature twirler.

Kailey is planning to study Industrial Engineering and will be joining OSU’s Air Force or Navy ROTC programs. Kailey is also looking forward to the change of scenery that OSU and Corvallis will provide.

She was also eager for the completely different landscape of Oregon.

“I think she was ready for a change,” her mother said.

Kailey is eager to soak up The Beaver State’s greenery.

“It is so beautiful up there.”

Dr. Brad Townsend has done a wonderful job as Director of the OSUMB which helps make Reser Stadium one of the most exciting game day atmospheres in the Pac-10. You can check out the OSUMB in action here.

Welcome to Beaver Nation, Kailey! GO BEAVS!
