OSU gymnastics starts the season off with a big win again No. 4 Oklahoma!

OSU started slowly scoring 48.850 in the opening rotation on the vault. But the Beavers never scored below 49-points in a rotation thereafter. Freshman Chelsea Tang, who has taken her vaulting up several notches in the past week according to associate head coach Michael Chaplin, tallied the Beavers’ highest score with a 9.825. Makayla Stambaugh followed with a 9.80 while Brittany Harris and Leslie Mak added scores of 9.75 and 9.725. Kelsi Blalock recovered from a balk on her first attempt to score 9.70 to round out the scoring for OSU.

It’s almost that time of year again Homecoming 2011 and Benny the Beavers birthday. What better way to kick off the weeks activities by having the first day start on the orange and black holiday of Halloween? Homecoming is a great opportunity for alumni and currents students to come together and celebrate OSU. Throughout the week there are going to be several events for alumni and end with the football game against Stanford. Below is a link with the schedule of the events and more detailed information.

Homecoming 2011 Schedule

Another very important component of homecoming is the celebration of Benny the Beavers birthday! This November 5th beaver believers have a chance to come to the Memorial Union building and have a slice of cake with benny. Lastly I have included a link if you are interested in learning more about the history of our beloved mascot.

On Wednesday, Athletic Director Bob De Carolis, announced that Ariko Iso will return to OSU as the Head Football Athletic Trainer. Ariko has achieved many accomplishments in her athletic training career so far. After graduating from OSU in 1993, she went on to get her Master’s in Physical Education at San Jose State University. Since 2002 Arkio has worked as the assistant athletic trainer for the Pittsburg Steelers, which included working in three Super Bowls with the team. In this position she also broke down gender barriers as the first and only female athletic trainer in the NFL. Iso said in a press release,

I’m very excited for the opportunity that lies ahead at my alma mater. Oregon State is where I started my athletic training education and I’m looking forward to returning to the beautiful campus after being away for 15 years. I have many fond memories of Corvallis as a student and I’m ready to make more.

Iso is an example of what graduates from OSU’s Athletic Training program can do with their degree. As stated on the Athletic Training website,

Oregon State University sponsors one of the oldest, most established athletic training programs in the United States. This program has been continuously approved/accredited by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (JRC-AT/CAATE) and/or the Commission on the Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs since 1974. The program is based on a 4 year academic plan with 2 full years of clinical experience. Student clinical experiences will vary, but will include several different university settings as well as high school settings.

The OSU community looks forward to welcoming Ariko Iso back to Beaver Nation!

With the ringing of 2011, come the good old New Year’s resolutions. It seems as though the majority of people out there are sticking to tradition and committing to either losing weight or getting back in shape. With that said, Dixon Recreation Center is buzzing with patrons working to achieve their goals.

DRC Main Entrance

What draws students and community members to Dixon Recreation Center (DRC) are the broad activities that are available. Specifically getting into shape, places like the lower and upper courts are a host to pick up games such as; basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, pickle ball and anything else imaginable. If racquetball, squash or wallyball is more your style, there’s about nine courts dedicated to such sports!

DRC Weight Room 1

If bulking up is on the list of things to do this 2011, Dixon has not one but two weight rooms to achieve strength goals. Weight Room 1 is a larger space that has selectorized weight equipment, plate-loaded weight equipment, a variety of free weights and benches. Equipment choices include Cybex, Magnum, Ivanko and Irongrip. For a space that is a little more private, Weight Room 2 can also be an excellent spot to hit the free motion weight equipment. Students looking for a little guidance on a weights routine have access to a personal partner training. This program allows two students to go through a personal training session together. With partner training, the trainer can design a program that is both catered to the students’ goals while flexible enough to be continued in the future.

Similar to the weight rooms, Dixon has two cardio rooms and a running track to enjoy getting back in shape. The cardio rooms are very unique and first of its kind. Why you ask? Here is an article from the Oregonian describing OSU’s cardio exercise equipment:

Oregon State University is harnessing the energy the machines can generate and converting it to electricity to feed back into the power grid.
It is among the first universities in the United States to do so.
With new technology developed by a Florida firm, Oregon State has retrofitted 22 elliptical exercise machines in its student fee-funded Dixon Recreation Center and already is collecting the power produced by students.

For students looking to hit the pool, can swim or find sanctuary in Steven’s Natatorium (Dixon Pool). Water in the lap swim pool, dive well and hot tub are all heated to perfection; 81.5 degrees, 83 degrees and 104 in the 16 person hot tub. The lap pool is available during the duration of the day with lanes divided by, slow, medium all the way to fast. Also, the Natatorium is home to the amazing Division I; Pac 10 Women’s Swimming team.

Another alluring amenity in Dixon is the breath taking climbing center. It is the tallest college climbing facility in the Pacific Northwest, 42.5 ft tall and is highly used by our OSU community. The multi pitched climbing surface caters to a broad spectrum of climbing abilities and variety of functions; bouldering cave, hang boards, universally accessible rappel station, cracks, arêtes and overhangs. Click here to take you to pictures from the 2009 Vertical Festival held in the lovely climbing center.

Lastly, Dixon Recreation (including Rec Sports) is the second largest student employer on OSU’s campus. In fact, my first job at OSU was working at Dixon Café for two glorious years. Click here to explore student employment at Dixon.

James and Jacquizz Rodgers are scheduled to open the annual Kaleidoscope of Colleges and Cultures (KCC) on Saturday, April 18th with a keynote address.

Rodgers duo to discuss what college has done for them

KCC is an annual event designed to assist students, especially those in underrepresented groups including first-generation and low-income, to better understand what college, college academics and the college search process is all about. KCC aims for students to seriously consider college as an option after high school, regardless of where they may choose to attend. Carl Thomas, associate director of admissions for campus visits and programs, sees the altruistic nature of the program,

“We are about promoting higher education. If they come to OSU, great. If they attend a different school, great. We have achieved our goal.”

Thanks to Paul Buker, Oregonian beat writer for noticing.

Finally, the brothers Rodgers, who haven’t been around that long but are already achieving legendary status in these parts, are scheduled to be keynote speakers Saturday at OSU’s annual “Kaleidoscope of Colleges and Cultures” program that celebrates the academic and cultural atmosphere at the school. … James and little brother Quizz are true multi-taskers.

Great article today from the El Paso Times about tonight’s CBI match up between the Beavers and UTEP Miners. The UTEP players and coaches came away with a very favorable impression of Gill Coliseum, comparing it to Duke’s Cameron Indoor:

UTEP and Oregon State, finalists in this second annual College Basketball Invitational best-of-three championship series, will go at it in Game 2 on Wednesday night in the Don Haskins Center. Oregon State took Game 1, 75-69, in the great atmosphere at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Ore.

“Seemed like Cameron Indoor (at Duke) or something,” UTEP sophomore Gabe McCulley said of the 8,029 fans in Gill. “It was a great atmosphere. Everybody was jumping up and down and you couldn’t hear anything.”

A group from the Admissions Office made it to Gill Monday night and we all agreed that this is the loudest we have heard Gill in a long, long time. Admittedly, the OSU basketball program has struggled over the last decade or so and this has greatly affected the game day atmosphere at Legendary Gill Coliseum. I think you’d have to admit that the echoes have re-awoken at Gill!

A gentleman who was sitting in front of my colleague, Danté Holloway and I turned around and exclaimed “you guys don’t understand! It used to be like this every night!!

Here’s a picture from right after the game ended courtesy of Alicia Ortega:

GO BEAVERS!

There are some more great shots of the game at oregonlive.com.

You can catch the game tonight on HD Net (if you happen to have it). Or, you can follow the call of five time Oregon Sportscaster of the Year, Mike Parker on KPAM 860 online anywhere in the world.

It has been so great to witness this basketball rebirth on campus. Here’s to many more years of success under Coach Robinson!

Well folks, it’s Civil War week! There is a ton of good will around the country directed towards the Beavers. Our guys and their run to Rose Bowl has garnered a good bit of attention. Governor Kulongoski who attended University of Missouri has declared his allegiances:

Gov. Ted Kulongoski tipped his hand today on which team he wants to win Saturday’s “Civil War” football game between the University of Oregon Ducks and the Oregon State University Beavers.
Color him black and orange.
“The Ducks won’t go to the Rose Bowl if they win,” the governor said. “I want the Beavers to go to the Rose Bowl.”
Kulongoski, a graduate of the University of Missouri, typically stays as neutral as possible in public on cross-state rivalries. Not this time.
“I’m all for the Roses,” Kulongoski said.

The Civil War is a special time in Oregon. We only have one pro team (the Trailblazers) in the state so the Division I college teams are the focus of a lot of attention. Everyone in Oregon, even those who didn’t attend OSU or UO, has an allegiance of some sort…Even the Governor.

We’ll try and check in later with some Civil War fun!

(note: the presence of roses in this post in no way is intended as a guarantee or any other offense that would result in the jinxing of my beloved Beavers. They are merely representative of the Governor’s desire to see the Beavers in the Rose Bowl…So, if the Beavers lose this Saturday, blame the governor)

GO BEAVS!
