This Saturday, May 18th, marks the annual OSU Community Day of Service, where Beavers across the nation will show their Beaver Nation spirit and volunteer in their communities. Brian Collins, a volunteer in Washington, D.C. said:

In addition to helping with many important community needs, Day of Service is a chance for Beaver alumni to reconnect with their fellow Oregon Staters wherever they live.

There are many projects that will be happening on Saturday across the nation. Included in those projects is a joint project between OSU and UO, where student athletes from both universities will be working on a Habitat for Humanity Build in Philomath, OR. Other projects include clean-ups at a zoo, working with foster care homes, trail clean-ups and working on community parks.

OSU alumni and friends can still register to participate this Saturday. Day of Service projects will be taking place from 9:00am to 12:00 noon in various locations across Oregon (Portland, Corvallis, Albany, Roseburg, Oakland, Eugene, Salem, Stayton, Dallas, Newberg, Newport, Bend, and Bandon) and across the nation in California, Washington State, Idaho, and Washington, D.C.

Happy Monday, Dear Readers!

On my gorgeously sunny drive to campus this morning I heard a great story on NPR about OSU Alumnus, Joshua Mater, a US Army Captain. Mater was recently wounded in Iraq when a rocket exploded near him in May.

From the Oregonian:

Capt. Joshua Mater, now stationed at Fort Bragg, has gathered about 200 engineering textbooks donated by the faculty at Oregon State.

They’re intended to help students at Dhi Qar University in southern Iraq learn how to construct roads, provide electricity and build bridges. The school has 10,000 students, one of the largest in the nation.

snip

Ron Adams, dean of the College of Engineering, said the texts were worth about $20,000, and they’re of recent vintage.

“The specific request was for 21st century textbooks,” he said.

It goes without saying that well trained engineers will make a huge difference as Iraq sets to the task of rebuilding itself. Just goes to show, that Land Grant service before self attitude, never fades! Kudos to Capt. Mater, keep up the good work.

A follow up from the Linus Pauling Day post from last week. The official Linus Pauling Stamp unveiling was held in the MU Ballroom yesterday. I wasn’t able to attend so I was very interested to see KEZI’s coverage of the event (which was great, by the way…Kudos KEZI!) .

“We are pleased to honor Linus Pauling as one of the top twenty scientists in the world,” said Corvallis Postmaster John Harrington.

After the ceremony, the Postal Service offered a commemorative one-day-only hand-stamped postmark designed specifically for the event.

The new stamp is part of a new series created by the Postal Service honoring American Scientists Gety Cori, Edwin Hubble, John Bardeen, and Linus Pauling. The event was hosted by a combined effort by OSU University Events, Special Collections and Printing and Mailing Services.

A truly great honor for Dr. Pauling and his family!
