The Oregonian, a statewide newspaper, has developed a contest for a redesign of the state’s flag. Seriously? No, I mean really? Do people think that it needs a face lift?

You can call me old fashioned but if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. And I’ll be the first to tell you that the state’s flag ain’t broke. There some things that are better left untouched, and the best known symbol for this great state is fine just the way it is. Some of you history buffs or flag enthusiasts may know that Oregon’s flag is the only one with a different design on each side. Michael Milstein from the Oregonian complains that the flag is “roughly twice the cost of other state flags because of its unusual two-sided design.” Hmmmm…. Cry me a river. I’d like to think the sentence should be that the flag is “roughly twice the VALUE because of its UNIQUE two-sided design.” This is the beaver state after all (and beaver nation, btw ) and dam right (pun intended) the beaver should remain. What’s Milstein’s real deal? What are his motives? I smell a duck.

The article mentions that “Gov. Ted Kulongoski loves the present flag, price and all, says his spokeswoman, Anna Richter Taylor. He has heard no one complain about it and will not consider a new design, she says. He has more important priorities.” Enough said.

Check out the comment section of the aritcle. Got an opinion of your own that you’d like to share? Sound off below.

Happy Monday, dear readers!

Over the last week and a half or so the Oregon State Media Department has been hosting 18 high school students in conjunction with the Oregonian Newspaper for the Minority Journalism Camp.

From the Oregonian Teen Blog:

The Oregonian and Oregon State University have been conducting the Minority Journalism Camp on the college campus this week. The camp involves weeklong instruction as well as an opportunity to publish as working journalists.

The 18 students this year will create the usual newspaper, but this year they also went digital, creating this blog including posts, video and photos to chronicle their experiences.

I have been keeping up to date with the happenings at the camp through the Journalism Camp 2008 Blog. If you haven’t had a chance to, read through it. There are some touching, humorous and personal stories that the students and counselors have posted; also, wonderful multimedia stories about the Corvallis and OSU Community. My personal favorite is the coverage of the Corvallis music scene by Kerina Blanchard and Annika Wolters.

Great work, team! I hope to be reading you all very soon!! If we here at the blog can get a PDF copy of the PRIDE (the newspaper the students produced) we will be happy to post it here.
