This past weekend the Memorial Union quad was home to two highly entertaining events under the title, I.AM.MUSIC. These annual programs are anticipated by students during the school year and they were a huge success. The Memorial Union Program Council (MUPC) organized the two day music festival on Friday, June 1st and Saturday, June 2nd. Battle of the Bands was on the 1st and showcased current OSU students showing off their talent. Twelve bands made the cut to rock in the quad to win the ultimate prize, victor of the 2012 Battle of the Bands.

The second day of the I.AM. MUSIC. program was Flat Tail Music Festival and the opening act was winner of the Battle of the Bands, Tuesday Night. The professional bands and artists brought to campus to play on the outdoor stage range from hip hop to rock to rap and everything in between. The headliner was Macklemore, a highly talented rapper from Seattle, WA.

It’s almost that time of year again Homecoming 2011 and Benny the Beavers birthday. What better way to kick off the weeks activities by having the first day start on the orange and black holiday of Halloween? Homecoming is a great opportunity for alumni and currents students to come together and celebrate OSU. Throughout the week there are going to be several events for alumni and end with the football game against Stanford. Below is a link with the schedule of the events and more detailed information.

Homecoming 2011 Schedule

Another very important component of homecoming is the celebration of Benny the Beavers birthday! This November 5th beaver believers have a chance to come to the Memorial Union building and have a slice of cake with benny. Lastly I have included a link if you are interested in learning more about the history of our beloved mascot.

Every summer, the Theatre Arts department performs a Shakespeare classic with the Memorial Union quad in the background. This year, the department presents As You Like It, one of Shakespeare’s festive comedies.

As You Like It “recounts the tale of several misguided and misdirected lovers who eventually find joy and peace in the arms of their truly truest loves. Filled with some of Shakespeare’s best-known characters (the vibrant heroine Rosalind, the clownish Touchstone, the melancholy Jaques), beautiful songs (‘Blow, blow thou winter wind . . . ‘), and some of Shakespeare’s most famous words (‘All the world’s a stage . . .’).”

This year’s performances are taking place on Wednesday, August 3rd – Sunday, August 7th and Wednesday, August 10th – Sunday, August 14th. Tickets are required to watch the production. You can find more information through Bard In the Quad’s website at http://oregonstate.edu/bardinthequad/. You can also contact the main office for the Theatre Arts Program at 541-737-2853.

Last Wednesday the Native American Longhouse held their annual Salmon Bake in the MU Brick Mall. Along with this annual celebration there was also a groundbreaking ceremony for the new site of the Native American Cultural Center at OSU. This groundbreaking signified the work of students like Christy Jones, a graduate student in the College of Education. She addressed the crowed in the morning along with President Ed Ray and representatives from tribes throughout Oregon. Christy spoke of her own involvement in the process for the new cultural center, which includes being a part of the planning committee for about four years now. “I didn’t think I would do this while I was still a student,” she stated.

“This event really was to honor the work of the students and Native American community,” said Victoria Nguyen, director of diversity and development. “It’s great to be able to move forward with all four of the cultural centers; The Native American Longhouse is just the first to near completion.”

The new center will be built next to the current location, southwest of the Memorial Union. Construction will begin next month with completion expected in early 2012. The center will take the shape of a traditional longhouse with a sloped roof and cedar plank siding, and will include areas for cultural events, space for student resources and a lounge area.

Several tribal members blessed the area for the new cultural center. After the groundbreaking, the 13th annual Salmon Bake took place. Students and community members lined up to enjoy salmon that was cooked traditionally on stakes over a fire. There was also a stage where native drums and poetry were performed. If you missed out on the ceremony on Wednesday, the events will continue tonight, May 13th, with the OSU PowWow taking place at McAlexander Field House. From 5:30pm to 6:30pm dinner will be served, followed by the Grand Entry at 7:00pm. There is a limited number for the dinner, so make sure to get there early!

Chelsea Clinton, daughter of Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton, made a stop at Oregon State University and spoke in the Memorial Union Main Lounge on Saturday. To a large crowd of mostly OSU students, faculty, staff and members of the Corvallis and various other communities, Chelsea answered a number of questions from the audience and expressed her mother’s views.

I found it funny the right outside the MU, the OSU Beavers baseball team were in the middle of a game in Goss Stadium against the Stanford Cardinals. Chelsea Clinton is a Standford alum. “I’m very sorry but I’m hoping for a different outcome,” she admitted to the audience of mostly Beaver fans during her speech, some of whom left the game to hear her. “I hope that you won’t hold that against me,” she continued, with a loud laugh from the attendees. Her presence on the campus of the two time defending national champions seemed to have worked: the Cardinals won 6-4

I think it’s great that political campaigns are beginning to make stops at Beaver Nation. Chelsea Clinton is the first official representative from the three major presidential candidates this year to visit the OSU campus as part of the stump. Sen. Hillary Clinton last visited the university in November 1996 as the nation’s First Lady and spoke in front of the Women’s Building to a crowd of about 4,000 supporters. Below are some photos and footage of Chelsea Clinton’s event. You can check out the Gazette Times website and see a better quality video of the Chelsea Clinton event. You’ll also see her give a shout out to the Beaver-Cardinal game and how she also humorously confused the OSU fight song that plays every day at 5:00pm for an ice cream truck passing by. I can’t blame her. It was hot out.

A follow up from the Linus Pauling Day post from last week. The official Linus Pauling Stamp unveiling was held in the MU Ballroom yesterday. I wasn’t able to attend so I was very interested to see KEZI’s coverage of the event (which was great, by the way…Kudos KEZI!) .

“We are pleased to honor Linus Pauling as one of the top twenty scientists in the world,” said Corvallis Postmaster John Harrington.

After the ceremony, the Postal Service offered a commemorative one-day-only hand-stamped postmark designed specifically for the event.

The new stamp is part of a new series created by the Postal Service honoring American Scientists Gety Cori, Edwin Hubble, John Bardeen, and Linus Pauling. The event was hosted by a combined effort by OSU University Events, Special Collections and Printing and Mailing Services.

A truly great honor for Dr. Pauling and his family!
