Writing for the OSU Admissions Blog has been a wonderful outlet for me to talk about an institution that I really care very deeply about. We do try to strike a delicate content balance for you the reader. As much as we would love to spend all of our time gushing about guys like Jacquizz and James Rodgers, we know that you come to the Blog for more than just football news. With that in mind, we are really selective what we post. There are more good stories about our student athletes off the field than we have space to share them in.

Today, I ran across a story from KOIN Channel 6 (the Portland CBS affiliate) that’s just too good to pass up. It’s about a young man named Isaiah Scott who happens to be a HUGE Beaver fan. He is also fighting Leukemia. Isaiah’s biggest wish was to meet his football hero, Jacquizz Rodgers.

Check out the story here:

Great stuff! Kudos to KOIN for the great story! There is a foundation set up for Isaiah at Wells Fargo. Contact your local branch for more information on how you can donate. We’ve all got Isaiah in our thoughts over the holidays. We can’t wait to see his application in a few years!

If you think I’m exaggerating the number of people who line up at ungodly hours to get tickets, look at the size of that line! Note the guys who had been sleeping in line SINCE THAT SATURDAY NIGHT!

Great article from the OSU Official Sports Report OSU students have made quite the tradition of camping out the Sunday evening before ticket distribution begins on Monday. There are usually a few hundred folks camping out for any given game.

Jacquizz and James Rodgers, Keaton Kristick and Head Coach Mike Riley showed up first thing Monday morning with hundreds of doughnuts to thank the OSU faithful for their loyalty.

Early yesterday morning at around 7:15 a.m., head coach Mike Riley, Keaton Kristick and James and Jacquizz Rodgers showed up at the Reser Stadium ticket office to offer donuts and thanks to surprised students – many of whom had braved the elements camping overnight to <del datetime="2009-11-10T21:06:22+00:00">purchase </del> [SIC: OSU students don't purchase their tickets, they pick them up] tickets for the Dad’s Weekend game against Washington.

Even though 7:15 a.m. is practically the middle of the night by Beaver OSR standards, and despite returning from the Bay Area hours earlier, OSR photog Brock Ameele scraped the sleep out of his eyes and headed to Reser when we caught wind of the visit

When we talk about Beaver Nation being a community that’s Powered by Orange…We aren’t kidding, folks! Kudos to Coach Riley and the players for the kind gesture AND to Beaver Nation for being the best fans in the Pac-10!

This past Friday and Saturday, OSU’s Kaleidoscope of Colleges and Cultures went off without a hitch. Students from across Oregon were brought to campus with one mission in mind: Go to College. Along with their students, counselors and community organizers traveled to Corvallis to learn more about college including the resources available to them, academic opportunities, cultural resource centers, student organizations and more. Students were able to hear OSU students and Beaver Football players James and Jacquizz Rodgers talk about their college experience and why they felt everyone should go.

See below for photos from the academic presentations and a video on various clips from the annual event including Scenes from OSU — an OSU talent show featuring OSU student clubs and organizations. Special thanks goes out to Carl Thomas, Claire Bennett, Alex Beck, Ana Flores, and Marleigh Luster from Visitations and Programs as well as Sandy Tsuneyoshi, Earlean Wilson Huey, Gustavo Martinez Padilla and Allison Davis-White Eyes from Intercultural Student Services; Janet Nishihara from the Educational Opportunities Program; Ellen Ford and Dana Beck from Precollege Programs, Wendy Alemán from the College Assistance Migrant Program; Jennifer Viña from University Housing and Dining Services; Eric Stoller from the College of Health and Human Sciences; and Lindsay Mitchell and Matt Ogawa from the Office of Admissions; as well as all of the departments and student organizations on campus who played a hand in making this a successful event.

KCC is an annual event designed to assist students, especially those in underrepresented groups including first-generation and low-income, to better understand what college, college academics and the college search process is all about. KCC aims for students to seriously consider college as an option after high school, regardless of where they may choose to attend.
