OSU students are getting their hands dirty this summer as they take part in OSU’s Archeology Field School at Champoeg Park in the Central Willamette Valley. The archeology dig is looking for artifacts from some of the earliest settlers in this area. The Champoeg State Heritage Area was the site of the first locally organized government in the Oregon Territory established in 1843.

Around 26 students are taking part in the Archeology Field School this summer. During this program students will learn archeology field techniques such as survey strategies and full-scale excavation techniques. The group has discovered several artifacts this summer, including the flintlock mechanism from a 19th century rifle, a piece of fine leaded crystal glassware, tobacco pipes adorned with faces, and part of a child’s writing slate and the pencil used with it. Â Based on the artifacts they have found they believe that there was a group of settlers there even earlier then they thought. For more information on their findings check out the video by OPB.

The Archeology Field School is a great opportunity for students to experience history first hand. Past field schools have taken place all over Oregon, including Yamhill and the Lower Salmon River. If you are interested in digging up your own piece of history as a part of the Archeology Field School click here for more information!

Hello all! My name is Kourtney Goya and I have recently joined the OSU Admissions Office as an Admissions Advisor. I graduated from OSU in June with a History degree and a minor in French. I travel and recruit students from Alaska, Colorado, and Lane County, Oregon.

I have previously written for the Admissions Blog as an undergraduate student. I have made a short video asking the OSU Community what their favorite thing about the university was, as well as highlighted the annual lu’au hosted by Hui-O-Hawaii (Hawaii Club). In addition to being an active member of Hui-O-Hawaii, I also worked with prospective students as a TOUR Coordinator and with current students through other on-campus clubs and organizations. I am grateful for the many opportunities Oregon State provides for their students to get involved.

As an Admissions Advisor, I am excited to share how amazing Oregon State University is and some of the experiences I had as a student. In the last three weeks I have traveled through Alaska and Colorado talking with prospective students. I enjoy working with future Beavers (as well as current Beaver Believers) and look forward to the rest of the year!

GO BEAVS!!!
