First ever footage of an infant Blue Whale captured

For the first time ever, an infant Blue Whale has been caught on film. The expedition, which included Bruce Mate from the OSU Marine Mammal Institute, was exploring a spot of the coast of Costa Rica called the “Dome”. This footage proves that The Dome is a birthing ground for Blue Whales.

From National Geographic:

March 4, 2009â€”A baby blue whale (shown with photographer) filmed off Costa Rica may be the first to have been photographed underwater and adds to evidence that a blue whale hot spot in the Pacific Ocean is a birthing ground for the endangered species.

During a January 2008 expedition to the “Dome”â€”a warm-water region that draws blue whales from hundreds of miles awayâ€”the researchers had begun to lose hope of finding a calf. Then two telltale spouts began erupting at the sea surface.

“Oh, tell me that one of them is a small blow, please,” Bruce Mate, of the Marine Mammal Institute at Oregon State University, says in the documentary.

A Moment to Breathe…Now, Back to Work!!

Wow! It has been an age since we have posted. Sorry for the inactivity, folks! We have been very busy around here between wrap up overviews, accepting ATDs, helping students get the last bits of their applications sent in and our regional PNACAC (Pacific Northwest Association of College Admission Counseling) conference in Spokane which the recruit staff presented jointly at; we haven’t had a moment to breathe.

I’ll clear out some of the news items that have been floating about here in Corvallis with the promise of a full report of the PNACAC conference and our presentation to come.

Admissions:

We have finalized a long time in coming Degree Partnership Agreement with Clackamas Community College.

ATDs for the fall are still being accepted. Remember that you must attend a START program to officially enroll and register for classes, you must pay your ATD to attend START.

Academics:

Very important findings and accomplishments by OSU faculty and students have been in the news recently. Oregon cheeses have arrived on the national cheese scene, the OSU Wind Ensemble will perform at Carnegie Hall this summer, and acidified sea water upwellings are creating a huge problem for Pacific Coast marine life.

Athletics:

A great story on CNNSI.com about new hoops coach, Craig Robinson and Saori Haruguchi has qualified for the olympics in the 200 m Individual Medley.
