Today, Oregon State University’s President Edward J. Ray gave the “State of the University” address to nearly 500 people at the Portland Hilton. Amongst many of the great accomplishments and goals of OSU, President Ray announced that The Campaign for OSU has crossed the $900 million mark toward the $1 billion goal! Below are a few of the recent news stories shared today.

National Sciences Foundation Grant

With a top-tier oceanography program, OSU has recently won this rare grant to design and build three ocean research vessels. OSU will initially receive $3 million for the design phase of the project, with an additional $290 million to come over the next 10 years if Congress provides the money to build these hi-tech ships. Of the three 175-foot long ships, OSU would operate one ship under the grant with the other two projected to go to the Gulf Coast and the East Coast. Timing is perfect as OSU’s current research vessel, the Newport (OR) based Oceanus, is set to be retired in 2020.

The Oceanus – Oregon State University’s current research vessel

The National Science Foundation hasn’t authorized a multi-ship project since the 1970s, OSU officials said, and no other NSF ships are likely to be built in the next decade.

Research on these ships is in areas such as predicting tsunamis, understanding ocean acidification and predicating global warming. This grant, along with a new ship, would continue to further the success of OSU’s College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospherics Sciences as well as further establish Newport as an “ocean research and education hub.”

OSU Performing Arts Gift

A $5 million gift from an anonymous donor is the largest the university has every received for the arts and is a commitment to advance its performing arts programs including digital arts, performance technology and communication. Part of the gift ($1million) is contingent on OSU securing an additional $1 million in private support, which can come from gifts of $25,000 or more.

With the gift establishing endowments for four faculty and staff positions and scholarship, graduate fellowship, and program funds; there is a lot of excitement around how this will elevate support for OSU’s School of Arts and Communication.

OSU Chamber Choir

Support of Engineering Research Facility

OSU has received a total of $20 million in private gifts for a new educational and research facility for the College of Engineering. A recent $7 million from Peter (and Rosalie Johnson), a 1955 engineering alumnus, joins an earlier $10 million gift from an anonymous donor and $4 million in additional private funds. With the possible matching of state funds, the $40 million building will meet the needs for engineering faculty, lab space and a center focused on the recruitment and retention of engineering students.

OSU Cascades

OSU Cascades in Bend, OR is the state’s first branch campus and is rapidly moving towards its goals of becoming a 4-year campus. To fund the expansion, the OSU Cascades has raised $3.3 million in private funds since last April towards their goal of $4 million.

Plans for OSU Cascades Expansion

During her time on the OSU faculty (1984-2001), Woods was honored for her teaching and helped launch Oregon State’s distance and continuing education programs. Sabah Randhawa, OSU’s provost and executive vice president had this to say about Woods:

Sandra Woods is an experienced and visionary leader, who directed Colorado State’s engineering program through an impressive period of growth in enrollment, research and impact.

Sandra Woods

Thomas Maness has been named the new dean of the College of Forestry. He has been at OSU as a professor and head of the Department of Forest Engineering, Resources and Management at OSU since 2009. As a forest economist who specializes in developing innovative forest policies and practices, Randhawa says:

His vision and experience will help us further advance the college and its contributions to the university’s signature area of advancing the science of sustainable earth ecosystems.

Thomas Maness

Both colleges are excited for the new leadership of Woods and Manness as Forestry and Engineering continue to grow as some of OSU’s top colleges in research and academics.

Making Waves (located in the main exhibit area) The O.H. Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory will show how scientists and engineers are learning how wave action affects our coastal areas, helping us better prepare for tsunamis and hurricane waves. They’ll be working with one of Hinsdale’s mini-flumes, crashing waves over models of coastal structures created by Folklife attendees.

Other OSU Presenters
Happening on the Mini-University/Discussions Stage

The OSU Folklife Committee has put forward a list of OSU and OSU Extension faculty members as potential presenters in the Smithsonian “Mini-University” area. Faculty in this area will be making 15-minute presentations on a wide range of topics throughout the Festival. We’ll provide additional detail on who the Smithsonian curatorial staff has selected as soon as that information is available.

Happy Traveling this Summer!

Engineering students at OSU had the opportunity to showcase a lot of the projects and research that goes on in our College of Engineering last Friday. There were more than 100 student built programs and each specialization was proudly represented. This event was open to the public and free. Along with the showcase of projects, a Robo*Palooza was also held during the expo and featured the award winning Mars rover robot and FIRST robots from local high schools. Tours of the O.H Hinsdale Wave Lab were also available to the public. Last year a boat made out of concrete was presented, it was build and raced by OSU engineering students. Also the formula 1 racing team was out talking to people about the research put into the car and team.

This is an annual event, if you missed it this year and are wanting to learn more about the College of Engineering I have included a link below. We offer a tour daily at 2pm M-F that focuses just on the many research opportunities that the College of Engineering has to offer students, if you are interested the 2nd link below will take you to our visit OSU page.
