OSU’s 14th Annual Benny Awards

Last night marked Oregon State University’s 14^th annual Bennys, an end-of-the-year celebration honoring the achievements of our student athletes.

Almost 40 Beavers were recognized for their accomplishments, with wrestler Clayton Jack and gymnast Leslie Mak taking home the Male and Female Athlete of the Year awards. Joan D and Ken Austin were presented with the Martin Chaves Lifetime Achievement Award as two of the university’s strongest supporters, including their $10million gift to the College of Business, where the new COB building will bear their name. In addition to individual awards, the Wrestling and Softball teams were acknowledged as the Male and Female Teams of the Year.

A Night in New Orleans – OSU’s 12th Annual Divine Nine Step Show

This past Saturday, May 26^th, Oregon State University’s Black Student Union hosted the 10^th Annual Divine Step Show. Attendees got to experience a live Jazz band, psychic palm reading, jambalaya and much more to feel like they were in New Orleans. With comedian Nate Jackson as the host, step teams from the Pacific Northwest competed for cash prizes in this fun filled evening, keeping true to its theme.

OSU Hosts 11th African American Youth Leadership Conference

Oregon State University hosted the 11^th Annual African American Youth Leadership Conference – and what a successful day it was! High school students from the Salem-Keizer School District were in attendance and heard from speakers, attended a variety of workshops and got to enjoy special entertainment during lunch from members of OSU’s African American Greek Life organizations. The theme of the conference was P.R.I.D.E.: Proud Responsible Individuals Dedicated to Excellence (Connect with Your Future: Dream, Focus, Plan, and Achieve Your Goals)

11th Annual African American Youth Leadership Conference

The goals of this conference are to promote positive youth development in African/African American youth and multicultural youth of African descent by:

Raising awareness on how to achieve personal goals
Emphasizing the value of education
Empowering future leadership (responsibility)
Establishing a sense of community
Increasing personal self-esteem and affirm cultural awareness

Always a pleasure to participate and host such a program.

Happy February 1^st! Not only is this Oregon State University’s admissions priority application deadline for scholarship consideration, but this also marks the start of Black History Month. The Lonnie B. Harris Black Cultural Center presents a number of events to celebrate this month, which is dedicated to Black history and culture in today’s world. RELENTLESS: A Documentary of OSU’s Global Formula Racing Team

Oregon State University’s Global Formula Racing Team has had great success in recent years and they continue on the pursuit of international championship bids. In 2010, they won 28 first-place awards and back to back No.1 World Rankings. This team is one of its kind as it is truly a global collaboration between the U.S.-based Formula SAE and European-based Formula Student programs – which respectively is the Beaver Racing Team from Oregon State University and the Duale Hochschule Baden-Wuttemberg-Ravensburg from Germany.

The upcoming documentary, RELENTLESS, will be taking viewers through a year in the life of the Global Formula Racing Team as they “devote every waking moment to the relentless pursuit of an international championship bid in this feature documentary.”
