One of the many amazing characteristics of Oregon State University is the opportunity for students to engage in real research during their college experience. OSU has a long tradition of research as a center for academic learning and our strong commitment to expanding this is reflected in major increases in research funding over the last 10 years. Researchers at OSU earned more than $275 million (Yes that is over 1/4 Billion Dollars) in scientific contracts and grants in 2009-10, which is an amount roughly double what OSU attracted in research funding only 10 years ago.

“Our faculty raise the bar and set new records year after year as they relentlessly expand and deepen the impact of our university’s research program, competing and succeeding at the highest levels in academia,” said OSU President Edward J. Ray. “Our efforts in earth ecosystems, health and wellness and economic progress and throughout the arts and sciences provide a strategic focus for our research endeavors that contribute not only to our overall success, but toward growing recognition of the excellence of our faculty in these areas.”

Students coming to OSU can expect to find endless opportunities to engage in research, whether it is through paid internships, lab assistantships or class projects. Undergraduates and Graduate students play a pivotal role in the continued success of research on the OSU campus and is one of the exciting aspects of joining a major research institution.

While these college of Forestry professors may not have invented ”Duct Tape,” they may very well end up changing the glue behind the idea. Recently Kaichang Li, a professor of wood science and engineering, and his postdoctoral research associate, Anlong Li, made an incidental discovery in a wood products lab at Oregon State University. Together they created a new pressure-sensitive adhesive that may revolutionize the tape industry – an environmentally benign product that works very well and costs much less than existing adhesives based on petrochemicals.

OSU is filled with many great researchers who are consistently making contributions to both science and society. It is always fun to recognize these unique discoveries that are being made here on campus, so please check out the full article.

We received the following comment from “Leonard” on our post about new basketball coach, Craig Robinson.

Come on give me a break.

You OSU fans no[SIC] full well, that if every player graduates with a 4.0 and the basketball team doesn’t win a PAC-10 title or make it to an NCAA Tournament within the next 4 years you’ll all be ready to fire this guy.

JUST WIN COACH. In fact win…then get out of town before they don’t like you anymore

My real quibble with Leonard’s argument is that he is insistent on separating athletic and academic achievement. Look at the most successful coaches in the history of college basketball: John Wooden, Ralph Miller, Mike Krzyzewski and Bobby Knight. Would you really argue that it’s coincidental that those gentlemen also HEAVILY emphasize academics and graduation as key cogs in their programs?

I would argue the inverse of Leonard’s statement, that a combination of high academic and athletic achievement is crucial because a combination of both is the only way to ensure sustainable excellence.

Thanks for your comment, Leonard. The Blog would love hear your thoughts. Do you agree with Leonard that academics don’t and shouldn’t ultimately matter in collegiate athletics? Hit us up with your comments on this issue!
–
On an OSU athletics related note: The OSU Gymnastics team brought home the NCAA West Regional Championship this weekend at Legendary Gill Coliseum.

From CSTV.com:

The Beavers put up a solid performance Saturday night at the NCAA West Regional Championship in Gill Coliseum. It marked the Beavers’ first regional victory since 1992. Competing against six other teams, Oregon State came out on top with a team score of 197.1. Coming in second, and also qualifying for Nationals was Michigan, posting a 196.375.

Referencing the conversation above, the OSU Gymnastics program is one of the top programs academically in the Pac-10.

GO BEAVS!

That’s all for now! Don’t forget to leave us your comments and discussion.
