Happy New Year from the Admissions office! We hope everyone had a good break. Before winter break all the admissions advisors were on the road traveling and visiting high schools and participating in College Fairs. Several high school students had the opportunity to go to a presentation or meet with an admissions advisor. To start of the New Year I wanted to collect some of the most asked questions of the fall season and answer them for anyone who didn’t get a chance to attend a college fair or meet with an OSU Admissions Advisor. Enjoy!

1. Does OSU offer a Psychology degree?

Yes, it is a nationally top ranked psychology program. At OSU we pride ourselves on the research that is conducted by students/professors and the psychology program is one that really encourages students to participate in psychology based research.

Psychology Degree Info

2. Does OSU have a Nursing Program?

We do not, However we do offer all the prerequisite courses that a student needs to take before applying to nursing school of your choice. Our Advisors do a great job of working with students interested in applying to a nursing school and making sure they are on track.

Pre-Nursing FAQ

3. Do I have to live on Campus my first year and where can I live?

OSU does not have a first year student live in requirement, it is a personal choice. Over 80% of first year students choose to live on campus. Students who live on campus their first year have a higher GPA and it’s a great environment to meet new people and make lifetime connections.

Housing Info

4. Are you the Beavers or the Ducks?

Home of the Beavers!

5. What is the weather like in Corvallis?

It does tend to be on the rainy side, I myself am from Eastern Oregon so I am used to dry weather with blazing summers and freezing winters. I would just suggest investing in a good rain coat and boots. My favorite season was fall because the temperature was in the 60/70’s and all leaves changing colors was amazing to see all around campus.

6. What is there to do in Corvallis?

There is always something going on at OSU/Corvallis. There are several events, concerts, games going on year round at OSU. There are over 300 clubs students can be a part of to become more involved on campus or have something fun to do. Another great thing about OSU is the location. We are close to the Coast if you want to have a fun beach weekend with friends and also about 90 minutes from Portland for shopping or enjoy the wonders of a big city. For the students interested in nature there are several hiking, biking, and running trail close by.

About Corvallis

7. Do you prefer the SAT or ACT and what is the required score?

It is up to the student whichever one they decide to take. If you do decide to take the ACT make sure you also take the writing portion. There is no minimum score to apply however when it comes to scholarships your SAT or ACT test score will be taken into consideration, we encourage students to do the best they can.

OSU Admissions Info

8. Can I study abroad?

Yes, we have over 200 study abroad programs a student can choose from depending on their major. We have study abroad counselors who can work with students and help find the right program for you.

Study Abroad Info

9. Do you have WUE (Western Undergraduate Exchange)?

For out of state students we do not participate in WUE however we do offer scholarships that are comparable to what WUE would cover. In order to apply for those you need to have completed your admissions application and turned in all required materials before the February 1st deadline. We also encourage student to look at over avenues for scholarships like around your community, scholarship websites, and filling out your FAFSA. For online scholarship resources, you should never have to submit your bank account or credit card number, it may be a scam.

Financial Aid Info

10. Why should I go to OSU?

We are Oregon’s Research institution, we are one of the only two University’s in the U.S. to have all 4 designation grants which are the Land, Sun, Sea , and Space Grant. What that means for our students is there are several opportunities for students to get involved in research and great hands on education. At the end of the day it’s a personal choice and the best way to make the decision is to see what OSU has to offer students for yourself by coming and scheduling a campus visit.

Schedule a Campus Visit

Hi everyone, my name is Bree Mead and I am a new admissions advisor for Oregon State University. I just recently graduated from OSU this past June with a Bachelors Degree in Art History and Fine Arts with a minor in Spanish. For my Art History Degree, my area of interest was Mesoamerican Studies and for Fine Arts my focus was Printmaking. I am from Novato, CA (just 30 minutes north of San Francisco) and I was a First Generation student. College was such an exciting time for me, going out of state really pushed me in unexpected ways and I am very proud of the woman I have become at OSU. Within those years, I had studied abroad in Santander, Spain, been president of my cooperative house, been a housing tour ambassador for four years and was a Community Relations Facilitator, teaching social justice and diversity in the resident halls.

One thing that I loved about OSU was the fact that it was very accepting of my being undecided with my major. Originally I thought I wanted to be an Art Teacher but then through my experiences on campus within housing, it really made me love working with students and making them feel at home within the OSU community. Oregon State University really is a phenomenal educational institution which provides students with tons of resources to becomem the best version of themselves.

This is me with my Linoblock Print I produced to be in our Senior Show.

So now that I am an Admissions Advisor, I am so happy to be able to go travel to Arizona, Utah, Southern and Central Oregon to tell students about all the amazing experiences that Oregon State University has to offer them.

Oregon’s seven public universities are getting ready to kick off the annual Oregon University System Fall Tour! Last year, the tour reached an estimated 20,000 students at over 200 public and private high schools across the state. New to the tour this year is OSU’s Cascades campus.

During the tour, students are able to receive information about the eight different campuses as well as learn and ask questions about financial aid, core college requirements, and other opportunities that are available to them in helping plan their future.

The tour kicks off next Monday, September 26th and goes through October 28th. A brief summary of the tour schedule is below. To view the full schedule and contact your county’s admission advisor, visit http://oregonstate.edu/admissions/recruit-map-0.

Week of Sept 26: Beaverton / Hillsboro & Southern Oregon
Week of Oct 3: Eastern Oregon & Central Oregon
Week of Oct 10: Salem & Portland
Week of Oct 17: Portland & Willamette Valley
Week of Oct 24: Eugene & Oregon Coast

In a statement released through OUS, Joe Holliday, the OUS Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Success Initiatives stated that “The fall tour is a truly a remarkable collaboration between all of our campus admissions personnel and Oregon high schools. High school students and counselors value and appreciate the events and face-to-face conversations with admissions staff, and the admissions reps do a great job expanding students’ awareness of the wide variety of diverse and quality programs our public universities offer. Many high school students don’t know just how many opportunities they have right here in Oregon.”

GO BEAVS!

Have you decided where you’re going to live next year?

It’s time for OSU students to choose their 2011-12 living options. We suggest applying for housing as soon as possible. Students wanting to live off campus are finding a tight rental market with a vacancy rate of about 1%. However, there are still many great options available for on-campus housing, including Halsell Hall, designed for upper-division students, and the new International Living Learning Center (ILLC) which opens in September, 2011.

Halsell hall is a great opportunity for returning students, as it is home to the Upper-division Experience (20 years-old and up) and Gender Inclusive Living programs, in an apartment-style living environment. This means students can choose to live in a room with any other student they wish including any gender identification.
Students and their suitemates have increased privacy and amenities with a shared living room/common area, private bathrooms, and a kitchenette. In Halsell students can connect with other residents of similar interests and values while enjoying the convenience of on-campus living.
An exciting new living option is the new ILLC opening on the southside of campus this fall. Domestic and international residents can have an international experience without ever leaving Corvallis. The ILLC will be a global village on campus, with about 50% of the residents representing many countries in Southeast Asia and beyond. In addition to program offering, there will be opportunities to pair up with language partners, cook meals together and engage with people different from yourself.
Each domestic student will be paired with an international roommate, and each room will share a bathroom with another room. Students can select to share a suite with a domestic friend and share the experience of living with international roommates.
Apply for on-campus housing today! Visit us online at oregonstate.edu/uhds or call 541-737-4771.

With the ringing of 2011, come the good old New Year’s resolutions. It seems as though the majority of people out there are sticking to tradition and committing to either losing weight or getting back in shape. With that said, Dixon Recreation Center is buzzing with patrons working to achieve their goals.

DRC Main Entrance

What draws students and community members to Dixon Recreation Center (DRC) are the broad activities that are available. Specifically getting into shape, places like the lower and upper courts are a host to pick up games such as; basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, pickle ball and anything else imaginable. If racquetball, squash or wallyball is more your style, there’s about nine courts dedicated to such sports!

DRC Weight Room 1

If bulking up is on the list of things to do this 2011, Dixon has not one but two weight rooms to achieve strength goals. Weight Room 1 is a larger space that has selectorized weight equipment, plate-loaded weight equipment, a variety of free weights and benches. Equipment choices include Cybex, Magnum, Ivanko and Irongrip. For a space that is a little more private, Weight Room 2 can also be an excellent spot to hit the free motion weight equipment. Students looking for a little guidance on a weights routine have access to a personal partner training. This program allows two students to go through a personal training session together. With partner training, the trainer can design a program that is both catered to the students’ goals while flexible enough to be continued in the future.

DRC Cardio Room 1

Similar to the weight rooms, Dixon has two cardio rooms and a running track to enjoy getting back in shape. The cardio rooms are very unique and first of its kind. Why you ask? Here is an article from the Oregonian describing OSU’s cardio exercise equipment:

Oregon State University is harnessing the energy the machines can generate and converting it to electricity to feed back into the power grid.
It is among the first universities in the United States to do so.
With new technology developed by a Florida firm, Oregon State has retrofitted 22 elliptical exercise machines in its student fee-funded Dixon Recreation Center and already is collecting the power produced by students.

DRC Lap Pool in Steven’s Natatorium

For students looking to hit the pool, can swim or find sanctuary in Steven’s Natatorium (Dixon Pool). Water in the lap swim pool, dive well and hot tub are all heated to perfection; 81.5 degrees, 83 degrees and 104 in the 16 person hot tub. The lap pool is available during the duration of the day with lanes divided by, slow, medium all the way to fast. Also, the Natatorium is home to the amazing Division I; Pac 10 Women’s Swimming team.

DRC Climbing Center

Another alluring amenity in Dixon is the breath taking climbing center. It is the tallest college climbing facility in the Pacific Northwest, 42.5 ft tall and is highly used by our OSU community. The multi pitched climbing surface caters to a broad spectrum of climbing abilities and variety of functions; bouldering cave, hang boards, universally accessible rappel station, cracks, arêtes and overhangs. Click here to take you to pictures from the 2009 Vertical Festival held in the lovely climbing center.

Lastly, Dixon Recreation (including Rec Sports) is the second largest student employer on OSU’s campus. In fact, my first job at OSU was working at Dixon Café for two glorious years. Click here to explore student employment at Dixon.

There is so much more Dixon Recreation Center provides anyone seeking to recharge, rejuvenate, revamp, get buff, or similarly to feel physically better! Click here to check out Dixon for yourself or here to join there facebook page.

Thanks for reading,

Happy New Year from the Office of Admissions!

Deadlines are fast approaching and a few exciting opportunities are coming up as well. College Goal Oregon  is an opportunity for students and parents/guardians to receive assistance in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  The Oregon Student Assistance Commission (OSAC) is a great resource for finding scholarships for Oregon residents.

Here is a listing of upcoming deadlines:

Application deadline for scholarship consideration: Â February 1st

FAFSA: February 28th

College Goal Oregon 2011: January 15, 22 and 29th

OSAC application deadline for Early bird review: February 16th
OSAC application final deadline: March 1st

Advanced Tuition Deposit (ATD) deadline: May 1st

Several of the departmental scholarships also have approaching deadlines. You will want to check with your individual college to check deadlines and availability.

Now is a great time to apply for housing and start searching for the perfect roommate! You should also consider scheduling a visit to campus.

The Harry Potter phenomenon can be seen all over the world. With the release of the second to last movie installment, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One,” the popular series is the core of a current Freshman Orientation course called “Finding your Patronus.” The class it taught by Potter fans OSU Dean of Students Mamta Accapadi and Chris Van Drimmelen. While fans are receiving college credit to study the books and films, they are also learning about the real life applications of the imaginary wizarding world and how Hogwarts and OSU students alike go through all of the same developmental phases. One OSU student shares her interpretation of how these students are alike:

“Meeting people from other areas, like in Hogwarts, Gryffindors meet Hufflepuffs, and Slytherins, and Ravenclaws and here you’ve got a Business major who is meeting with Forestry majors and Engineers and Pre-Meds. You get to meet a whole bunch of different people who have really different interests, but you find out you have a lot in common anyway.”

Harry Potter and his wizarding world have also had other transitions into the Muggle world within the last few years with the exploding popularity of Quidditch, a fictional sport played on flying brooms. The International Quidditch Association held the fourth annual Quidditch World Cup in New York November 13-14. Oregon State University is on the list of Quidditch teams being currently formed.

So Harry Potter fans, OSU might be your very own Hogwarts-complete with courses, Quidditch, a Beaver House scarf, and a building that would fit right in at Hogwarts.

Waldo Hall has a Hogwarts feel

Check out this great new program from OSU University Housing and Dining. Anyone on the OSU campus with an OSU ID card who makes use of our excellent dining halls and coffee shops should look into this!

Food@OSU introduces Orange Rewards. Join the newly created Orange Rewards program and your OSU ID card will give you a 10% discount at all 28 campus restaurants, coffee shops, and markets. Get started by making an initial deposit of $100 on your OSU ID card account.

At first glance, this program may seem to make more sense for faculty and staff, and on campus residents are already part of the dining program. But here are some advantages for everyone!

Students can use Orange Rewards at any Food@OSU location on campus

Off-campus students, transfer students, non-traditional students, and those who split their time between LBCC and OSU could make excellent use of this program.

Yesterday marked the first time OSU’s class of 2014 made the symbolic walk from the Memorial Union Quad to Gill Coliseum. This is the same walk that many of these students will be taking in four years during commencement. Also called “The New Student Walk”, students gather by their declared college and march to Gill Coliseum to listen to an official academic welcome by Larry Roper, Vice Provost of Student Affairs and even OSU President Ed Ray. The walk and convocation is a way to welcome the new students to the campus. This is just one piece of the excitement that is CONNECT week. The full schedule is located on the New Student Programs and Family Outreach page. -EVA

Today we bring you one of our other guest bloggers, Bob Kerr, coordinator of Greek Life at OSU, to discuss how to navigate Greek Recruitment (what was formerly known as RUSH Week).

So, the day has finally arrived and you are headed for your freshman year at Oregon State. You have decided, in concert with your parents, to participate in Greek recruitment (rush). With 45 chapters and 1900 students, Greek recruitment may feel a bit overwhelming. To help you enjoy the process, I have some success tips to help you make an informed decisions. So here goes:

1)	Develop some questions that you will ask the chapters you visit. It is important that you recruit the chapter as much as they recruit you. Questions such as, “What is your scholarship support program?” and “What are your new member requirements?” and “What about intramural sport teams and community service?”
2)	Get a clear picture of the time commitment. There is always a minimum number
of hours you will need to invest to be successful.
3)	Clarify the cost to join. Be sure to ask about incidental fees like Dads Weekend,
and other special events,
4)	Talk with your parents about your interest to join and answer any of their
questions.
5) Relax and enjoy yourself. Greek life is work but even the work is fun.

These success tips will help you navigate fraternity/sorority recruitment and insure that you are making an informed decision. The Greek community at Oregon State is an outstanding community with much to offer. If you, or your parents, have any questions, please feel free to contact me at bob.kerr (at) oregonstate.edu. Or, call me at 541-737-3660.

Welcome to Oregon State and I look forward to enjoying your participation in the OSU Greek community.

Sincerely,

Bob Kerr
Coordinator of Greek Life
Oregon State University

If you are interested in participating in Greek recruitment this fall, visit http://greeks.oregonstate.edu and select ‘fraternities’ or ‘sororities’ depending upon your gender.

Oregon State University has been named a Best Buy School in the upcoming edition of “The Fiske Guide to Colleges” for 2011.

The revised and updated 2011 edition features more than 300 colleges and universities, and names 45 institutions – 21 public and 24 private – as Best Buys. These institutions fall into the inexpensive or moderate price category with four- or five-star academic ratings.

Best Buy schools are named according to the quality of a

cademic offerings in relation to the cost of attendance.

“The Fiske Guide to College” accepts no consulting, advertising, or other fees from colleges and has no outside relationship with colleges working on its behalf.

Also, “The Fiske Guide to Colleges” named OSU as “Best Buy College” a few years ago. Below is a brief look at the guide’s review of OSU in 2009.

“In the face of today’s skyrocketing tuition rates, students and families in all economic circumstances are looking for ways to get the best value for their education dollar,” read the guide. “Fortunately, there are some bargains to be found in higher education; it just takes a bit of shopping around with a little guidance along the way.”

In the guide’s lengthy entry on OSU, it notes that “OSU “is strong in many departments, including biotechnology, forestry and engineering. Says one satisfied freshman, ‘If you are looking for a college that is close-knit and has a friendly college town, OSU is the place to go!’”

As always…thanks for reading.

A big hello and congratulations to the incoming fall class! I hope you enjoyed your respective high school commencements and graduation celebrations. The OSU Office of Admissions would like to put a friendly reminder on your radar screen to have your final high school transcript reflecting your graduation date sent our way. If we don’t get your transcript before the beginning of winter quarter, you will not be able to register for winter classes. So, get that transcript in the mail and enjoy the rest of your summer worry free!

Oh, and don’t forget to send any IB/AP scores and college work that you would like applied to your record as well.

We can’t wait to see you this fall!
