If you haven’t already, you will want to confirm your intent to enroll by paying your $200 Advance Tuition Deposit (ATD). You must pay this before registering for a START program. Depositing your ATD online is the easiest and fastest way to submit the funds. Go to http://infosu.oregonstate.edu/login and enter your student ID and General Access Pin (GAP). Once you’ve accessed the system, click Admissions then Pay Advance Tuition Deposit and follow the instructions. As of May 1, 2012 your deposit is non-refundable.

After you have completed this, you may now register for your START orientation.  START is Oregon State’s new student orientation, advising and registration program for incoming students. START is the first of three steps to making a successful transition into the OSU community. Each START program provides students and their family members with the opportunity to connect with campus resources, meet with an academic advisor, and register for Fall term courses.

Some of you might be thinking though, “What if mysummer schedule is really packed?”  Well, we offer several dates throughout the summer for both First Year and Transfer Students to attend. We also offer START on the Road programs in California, Alaska and Hawaii for students who cannot attend the START programs provided on campus. Also, if you cannot attend any of these dates, you can attend START @ CONNECT on September 19^th, 2012 on campus.

It has been an especially long journey to this point for Whitman, who has been a member of IHSA since her freshman year at OSU. For the last four years, she has traveled to nationals with the team; each year, Whitman and her teammates had dealt with the cliché “close but no cigar” scenario. But not anymore.
“When I realized that I was in the arena, and there was only one team that could catch us and their rider placed under me, I thought I was going to cry, or puke. It was honestly very surreal.” Whitman said.

Pride Week 2012: Dimensions of OSU

The Rainbow Continuum is proud to present the 2012 Pride Week, Dimensions of OSU.  They have scheduled almost 30 events happening this week, Sunday May 6th through Friday May 11th.  Some of this week’s events include a kick off dinner and vigil, a BBQ, sessions, movie screenings and a student ran drag show.  You can find complete details and descriptions about the activities below and on The Rainbow Continuum website.

Oregon State University prides itself in the fact it is rated 5/5 stars on the LGBT-Friendly Campus Climate Index. For the second year in a row, OSU ranks high in being one of the nation’s most gay-friendly campuses. Out of 300 campuses reported on by the Campus Pride LGBT-Friendly Campus Climate Index, OSU was amongst 33 American colleges and universities to get the highest score of 5/5.

To confirm your intent to enroll at Oregon State University, you must submit the Advanced Tuition Deposit (ATD) form along with your $200 deposit. This applies to all fall, winter, spring, and summer students.

This allows us to create your student account and make plans for your arrival. When you arrive on campus prior to the start of classes, your $200 deposit will be applied to your tuition or any account balance you may have.

Remember (Fall Term Students Only): Payment of your ATD is required to participate in the START program, which allows you to register for Fall term courses. As of May 1, 2012 your deposit is non-refundable.

Here are some quick and easy steps on how to pay your Advanced Tuition Deposit:
1. Go to http://infosu.oregonstate.edu/login.
2. Use your ONID credentials to access the system. If you do not yet have an ONID ID, you can use your student ID (on the letter of admission) and your GAP number (your birth date).
3. Once you’ve accessed the system, click ‘Admissions’, then click ‘Advanced Tuition Deposit’.
4. You will be provided with instructions on how complete the ATD form and pay the deposit.

You can accept your Financial Aid award through Student Online Services. By accepting your award, you are stating that you have read, understand, and accept the Terms and Conditions of your award. Scholarship award offers were mailed separately from a financial aid award letter. Scholarship offers must be signed and returned to the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships. They cannot be accepted online.

The Daily Barometer: Best Student Newspaper in Northwest Region

The newsroom at Oregon State University’s daily newspaper, The Barometer is celebrating numerous accolades from the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ).  The society’s Northwest region awarded OSU’s Barometer with the top award during the annual conference in Tacoma, WA on March 31^st.  The Barometer was award with the highest honor, best student newspaper in the five-state area.  The awards didn’t stop there.  The newspaper also received the following Mark of Excellence awards:

First place, “Best All-Around Daily Student Newspaper” 4-year college/university
First place, “Sports Column Writing”, 4-year college/university, Jesse Severson writer

This is not the first time The Daily Barometer has been recognized by the Society.  SPJ honored The Barometer as the best daily student newspaper in the nation in 2001, and tied for second place in 2002.  The 2012 first place region award winners will go on to the national Society of Professional Journalists competition on September 20-22, 2012 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  We wish them luck during the upcoming competitions!

Hosted at the OMNIMAX Theater, ‘RELENTLESS’ is a documentary chronicling a year in the life of Global Formula Racing Team. Made up of students in a multinational partnership who design and build formula cars for an extremely competitive international racing circuit, the GFR team hails from Oregon State University and DHBW Ravensburg, Germany. They devote every waking moment to the relentless pursuit of an international championship bid.

The world-winning car and members of the GFR Team will be at a pre-screening reception, so come by and see the machine and the students who created and raced it. The GFR Team are back-to-back world champions.

Sarina Saturn who is a neuropsychologist and an assistant professor of psychology at Oregon State University has earned The Career Award, which is the most prestigious award from NSF for new faculty members.  Sarina is going to be creating a partnership between the Cross-Cultural Mentorship Program and the College Assistance Migrant Program at OSU to expose first generation and underrepresented students to research opportunities at OSU.

The students will be able to be a part of Sarina’s research on

 how naturally occurring variations in the oxytocin hormone (also known as the “love hormone”) influence the experience and expression of uplifting emotional states and altruism in young children, young adults and older adults

Last Friday, Sonny Ramaswamy, dean of Oregon State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences was appointed director of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture by President Barack Obama. Ramaswamy started at OSU in 2009 and has made many accomplishments during his short time here. Carl Casale, an OSU graduate and president of CHS Inc., a leading energy, grains and foods company stated that “the vision and progressive thinking that Sonny has brought to the College of Agricultural Sciences has helped position Oregon State as one of the leading land grant universities in the nation.”

 Sonny will start this new position in May. The National Institute of Food and Agriculture is the lead agency within the USDA that supports research, education and extension programs in the nation’s land-grant university system. Sonny is not the first OSU faculty member to be appointed to high-ranking positions in the Obama administration. Ramaswamy will join Jane Lubchenco, who was named Director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
