Oregon State’s very own, Ariko Iso, Head Athletic Football Trainer was in Eastern Oregon for the annual Japanese American Citizen League (JACL) celebration honoring 10 local high school seniors.  The event was held at the Four Rivers Cultural Center in the heart of beautiful Ontario on May 1^st.  The Argus Observer newspaper reported this about the evening;

 The keynote speaker was Ariko Iso, the head football trainer at Oregon State University. She gave a very inspirational talk about her life and her journey from Tokyo to OSU, to San Jose State University, to Portland State University, to the Pittsburgh Steelers and back to OSU in 2011. She has been the ONLY female head athletic trainer in the NFL, but that was not her original goal. She wanted to be a trainer in the National Basketball Association (NBA), but she is grateful where her life’s work has taken her and she enjoys going to work every day. Ariko says she has been fortunate to have gone to 8 NFL playoff games and 3 Super Bowls. She was never intimidated by super star athletes, since she didn’t know who they were as she worked 6 days a week and didn’t spend Sundays watching NFL games. One of the coaches told her that everyone’s elbows and knees are still just elbows and knees, no matter who’s body they are on. She never thought that being Asian or female hindered her employment possibilities since she just wanted to be known as an athletic trainer. She reminded the graduates that you need to love what you are doing, that you take one day at a time, and her motto is, “work hard and play hard”. Several of the seniors spoke to Ariko at the end of the evening since many of them are athletes and want to go into health related or physical therapy occupations.

Recently, an article was published by the Wine Spectator showcasing Oregon State’s efforts to recycle pomace; or what is leftover after grapes are harvested and pressed for wine. Yanyun Zhao, a professor here at OSU, is working to transform this waste into baking flour and other sustainable products.  This substitute, both healthy and earth conscience, is just one example of the new developments that are being discovered here in Beaver Nation.  As one of only two schools in the United States that have all four designated grants for land, sea, sun and space; Oregon State University continues to be a top tier research institute allowing students to not just sit in a classroom but be active in their field of study.

Students, staff, and faculty are invited to take part in this event and celebration.

8 service projects will be offered for the 2013 event addressing diverse issue areas and including various types of projects. This years service projects include Corvallis Parks & Recreation, Habitat for Humanity, Boys & Girls Club, Edible Corvallis Initiative, Stone Soup, Heartland Humane Society, Corvallis Environmental Center, and Oregon State University College Forests. Pre-registration is required. Participants will assemble at McAlexander Fieldhouse between 8:30 and 9am on Saturday January 19th. Continental breakfast and hot tea/coffee will be provided during the check-in process and a hot lunch will be provided upon return to campus between 1pm and 1:30pm. The 2013 MLK Day of Service is sponsored by the Center for Civic Engagement, the Student Events and Activities Center, and HandsOn Willamette.

On Sept. 1, 2012, Oregon State University joined hundreds of other U.S. colleges and universities that are already smoke or tobacco free. Having a smoke-free campus is consistent with OSU’s mission and initiatives to promote healthy living and a healthy planet.

Second-hand smoke is an identified health hazard increasing the risk for cancer, stroke and heart disease. Exposure to smoke also amplifies health concerns for children, the elderly and those with chronic respiratory conditions. (American Cancer Society, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)

Public health initiatives that include a mix of environmental and policy changes, educational programs, and resources that provide support and skill-building are the most effective method for changing health behavior; such as smoking.

Other worksites that have adopted smoke- or tobacco-free policies have shown a decrease in the number of individuals who smoke. Individuals are more likely to quit smoking or think about quitting smoking when the availability of places to smoke is reduced. Ex-smokers have fewer days of illness, fewer health complaints and less bronchitis and pneumonia than current smokers.

Other community benefits of a smoke-free campus include a reduction in fire hazards, less litter from cigarette butts, and lower health care costs.

Pride Week 2012: Dimensions of OSU

The Rainbow Continuum is proud to present the 2012 Pride Week, Dimensions of OSU.  They have scheduled almost 30 events happening this week, Sunday May 6th through Friday May 11th.  Some of this week’s events include a kick off dinner and vigil, a BBQ, sessions, movie screenings and a student ran drag show.  You can find complete details and descriptions about the activities below and on The Rainbow Continuum website.

Oregon State University prides itself on the fact it is rated 5/5 stars on the LGBT-Friendly Campus Climate Index. For the second year in a row, OSU ranks high in being one of the nation’s most gay-friendly campuses. Out of 300 campuses reported by the Campus Pride LGBT-Friendly Campus Climate Index, OSU was amongst 33 American colleges and universities to get the highest score of 5/5.

DRC Main Entrance

What draws students and community members to Dixon Recreation Center (DRC) are the broad activities that are available.  Specifically getting into shape, places like the lower and upper courts are a host to pick up games such as; basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, pickle ball and anything else imaginable. If racquetball, squash or wallyball is more your style, there’s about nine courts dedicated to such sports!

DRC Weight Room 1

If bulking up is on the list of things to do this 2011, Dixon has not one but two weight rooms to achieve strength goals.  Weight Room 1 is a larger space that has selectorized weight equipment, plate-loaded weight equipment, a variety of free weights and benches. Equipment choices include Cybex, Magnum, Ivanko and Irongrip.  For a space that is a little more private, Weight Room 2 can also be an excellent spot to hit the free motion weight equipment.  Students looking for a little guidance on a weights routine have access to a personal partner training.  This program allows two students to go through a personal training session together. With partner training, the trainer can design a program that is both catered to the students’ goals while flexible enough to be continued in the future.

DRC Cardio Room 1

Similar to the weight rooms, Dixon has two cardio rooms and a running track to enjoy getting back in shape.  The cardio rooms are very unique and first of its kind.  Why you ask?  Here is an article from the Oregonian describing OSU’s cardio exercise equipment:

Oregon State University is harnessing the energy the machines can generate and converting it to electricity to feed back into the power grid.
It is among the first universities in the United States to do so.
With new technology developed by a Florida firm, Oregon State has retrofitted 22 elliptical exercise machines in its student fee-funded Dixon Recreation Center and already is collecting the power produced by students.

DRC Lap Pool in Steven’s Natatorium

For students looking to hit the pool, can swim or find sanctuary in Steven’s Natatorium (Dixon Pool).  Water in the lap swim pool, dive well and hot tub are all heated to perfection; 81.5 degrees, 83 degrees and 104 in the 16 person hot tub.  The lap pool is available during the duration of the day with lanes divided by, slow, medium all the way to fast.  Also, the Natatorium is home to the amazing Division I; Pac 10 Women’s Swimming team.

DRC Climbing Center

Another alluring amenity in Dixon is the breath taking climbing center.  It is the tallest college climbing facility in the Pacific Northwest, 42.5 ft tall and is highly used by our OSU community.  The multi pitched climbing surface caters to a broad spectrum of climbing abilities and variety of  functions; bouldering cave, hang boards, universally accessible rappel station, cracks, arêtes and overhangs.  Click here to take you to pictures from the 2009 Vertical Festival held in the lovely climbing center.

Lastly, Dixon Recreation (including Rec Sports) is the second largest student employer on OSU’s campus.  In fact, my first job at OSU was working at Dixon Café for two glorious years.  Click here to explore student employment at Dixon.
