Are you an admitted student and thinking about attending Oregon State in the Fall?

If yes, applying for housing should be on your list of things to do! Once a student has been admitted they can begin the process of applying for housing here: http://oregonstate.edu/uhds/apply-now .

Applying not only reserves your spot to live on campus but it also allows you to rank your preferred Residence Halls. It also allows you to create a Roommate Matching Network profile. The Roommate Matching Network is a neat tool students can use to find a roommate. Its kind of like eHarmony meets Facebook, it allows the student to create a profile and answer a few questions about themselves and then determine how compatible they are with a potential roommate.

We also give students the opportunity to choose exactly which room you will be living in.

So, if you haven’t already, apply for housing!

Important dates:

May 20, 2013: New OSU students in academic groups (University Honors College, Engineering, and the Austin Entrepreneurship Program) may select rooms

May 28 – June 2, 2013: New OSU students who completed a housing app before February 1, 2013 may select rooms

June 5 – June 17, 2013 at 5 PM: New OSU students with completed housing applications may select rooms

July 1, 2013: Assignment notifications available on MyUHDS for new students (dependent on space availability and application date)

Whether you are just starting your college search or are already admitted to OSU, our open house programs can accommodate your needs. We have several full-day programs during the year to provide you an in-depth look at OSU.

OSU Spring Visits are a great opportunity to learn the basics about Oregon State University. You’ll spend the day meeting with representatives from key academic and administrative areas, have a chance to tour the campus, and get some time to speak with current OSU students. Choose one of our three remaining spring visit opportunities and click the corresponding link to register for the event.

Spring Preview | Friday, March 29, 2013 (Spring Break) | LaSells Stewart Center, CH2MHill

Spring Preview | Friday, April 5, 2013 | Memorial Union

Spring Preview | Friday, April 12, 2013 | LaSells Stewart Center, CH2MHill

When you take your tour of OSU; you’ll explore many on-campus housing choices, taste and see what students eat and where they socialize and tour the buildings where your classes will be held. Scope out the recreational options open to you on or near campus. Find that spot that will inspire you to do something great or different.

Come visit and see if OSU fits you and your future.

You’ve been admitted, what’s next?

Scholarship Acceptance

If you applied for OSU Scholarships through the admission application and you were selected for a scholarship award, you will be sent a letter of offer. You must respond to this scholarship by May 1, 2013 to secure any scholarship awards prior to the deadline. Scholarship offers are now only accepted online! Follow the instructions in your offer letter. The scholarship letter of offer is not the same as the financial aid award offer which may note the scholarship offer as an estimated form of assistance for the school year.

Financial Aid

If you submitted your FAFSA, you will receive a Financial Aid Award Offer. This letter outlines your financial aid package listing the financial assistance Oregon State can offer to help bridge the gap between your own resources and the cost of attending OSU. Awards are generally based on financial need as determined by the FAFSA. This includes gift aid such as grants, self-help programs like student or parent loans and work-study.

View and accept your Financial Aid Award through OSU’s Student Online Services:

Log in using your OSU ID number

Go to Financial Aid and select My Award Information

Choose Award by Aid Year and select your aid Year

Under the far right tab, click Accept Award Offer

Make your decisions about the aid you want and hit Submit when done

*Please note: Pell Grants do not require acceptance. Scholarships require submission of the acceptance letter, which is sent separately from the award letter.

Pay the Advance Tuition Deposit

To confirm your intent to enroll at Oregon State University you must submit the Advance Tuition Deposit (ATD) forma long with your $200 deposit. This allows OSU to create your student account and make plans for your arrival. Your $200 deposit can be applied to your tuition or any account balance you may have.

Payment of the ATD is required to participate in the START program, where you will meet with an advisor and register for Fall term courses. There are two ways to submit the ATD form and payment –complete the form online and pay electronically or print the form and mail in with a check.

Depositing your ATD online is the easiest and fastest way to submit the funds. Go to http://infosu.oregonstate.edu/login and enter your student ID and General Access Pin (GAP). Once you’ve accessed the system, click Admissions then Pay Advance Tuition Deposit and follow the instructions. As of May 1, 2013 your deposit is non-refundable.

Live on Campus

University Housing & Dining Services (UHDS) provides opportunities for student growth and development through educational, cultural, recreational and social programs in living/learning communities. Studies continually show that students who live on campus their first year have a higher average GPA than those that don’t, and these students are more likely to return for their second year on campus.

Students apply to live on campus after being admitted to OSU, and will use their ONID (OSU Network ID) account to complete the application online at http://oregonstate.edu/uhds .

UHDS is proud to offer the Roommate Matching NetworkTM to students applying for on-campus housing. This program allows students the option of creating a personal profile and reviewing the compatible interests and habits, you can contact them directly and select to live together.

Important Dates for On-Campus Housing:

November 1, 2012: New student housing application available

December 1, 2012: Roommate Matching Network available

May 20, 2013: New OSU students in academic groups (University Honors College, Engineering, and the Austin Entrepreneurship Program) may select rooms

From oregonstate.edu/smokefree:

On Sept. 1, 2012, Oregon State University joined hundreds of other U.S. colleges and universities that are already smoke or tobacco free. Having a smoke-free campus is consistent with OSU’s mission and initiatives to promote healthy living and a healthy planet.

Second-hand smoke is an identified health hazard increasing the risk for cancer, stroke and heart disease. Exposure to smoke also amplifies health concerns for children, the elderly and those with chronic respiratory conditions. (American Cancer Society, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)

Public health initiatives that include a mix of environmental and policy changes, educational programs, and resources that provide support and skill-building are the most effective method for changing health behavior; such as smoking.

Other worksites that have adopted smoke- or tobacco-free policies have shown a decrease in the number of individuals who smoke. Individuals are more likely to quit smoking or think about quitting smoking when the availability of places to smoke is reduced. Ex-smokers have fewer days of illness, fewer health complaints and less bronchitis and pneumonia than current smokers.

Other community benefits of a smoke-free campus include a reduction in fire hazards, less litter from cigarette butts, and lower health care costs.

For more information, background, FAQs and resources, go to oregonstate.edu/smokefree.

From OSU News:

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State University will revise its First Year Experience program for new students over the next several years in an effort to help students succeed academically and improve retention.

A task force of OSU faculty, staff and students has been working on ways to help students thrive academically and personally during the first year. It concurs with what many national studies have found: The best way to ensure that students return for their sophomore year is to help them “connect” to campus in a meaningful way, said Susie Brubaker-Cole, associate provost for academic success at OSU and co-chair of the task force.

“What we’re seeking is a ‘high-touch’ experience for students during that first year when it becomes critical for them to interact in meaningful ways with other students, with faculty and with campus programs,” Brubaker-Cole said. “A lot of this happens in the classroom, but much of it is an extension of classroom learning that reaches into life on campus and the experiences you have as a member of campus communities.”

As an integral part of OSU’s initiative, first-year students will be required to live on campus for their first academic year beginning fall term of 2013. (my emphasis)

“If you look at top universities in the country in terms of academic success and student retention, almost all of them require students to live on campus their first year,” Brubaker-Cole said. “The learning and community-building that occur in campus residences are focal points of the first-year experience.”

OSU has done well with retention over the past few years, hovering around 82% of students returning for their sophomore year. While that is ahead of peer institutions, there is room for improvement that can be realized by tying together efforts of many parts of the student experience into a cohesive one. Concerns about ample housing offerings and exceptions for some students are addressed:

Tom Scheuermann, director of University Housing and Dining Services at OSU, says his office has assessed its overall on-campus housing capacity and will have adequate space for the live-on-campus requirement. In addition to the International Living-Learning Center that opened last year and houses 320 students, OSU’s on-campus capacity will get a boost from a new residence hall that is in design with a planned opening of fall 2014.

Scheuermann said on-campus capacity this fall (2012) should be about 4,300 spaces, which will grow by another 300 in 2014 with the new hall. And some floors in Finley Hall that will be off-line in the coming academic year, or used for office space, will reopen in fall of 2013.

In recent years, about 80 percent of the new-to-OSU freshmen have lived on campus.

There will be some exceptions granted to the new requirement, OSU officials say, though specifics have yet to be determined.

I bet a lot of students are celebrating the ending of their school year by relaxing, working a summer job, hanging out with friends or just enjoying their free time. Some students are looking back at the completion of their sophomore or junior year and might not even be thinking about the next big step; going to college. Here is a little secret from me to prospective students…summer is a wonderful time to visit Oregon State University!

Our Campus Visitor Center is open during the week and excited to welcome interested students and their families to explore our beautiful campus and programs. The Campus Visitor Center is open Monday through Friday with current OSU students leading tours at 9am, 10am, 11am, 1pm, 2pm with the last tour departing at 3pm. On top of the campus tour, visiting prospective students can take advantage of a housing tour, specific college tours, meet with University Honors College and if available an appointment with an Academic Advisor and Admissions Representative.

For the best on campus experience, I would advise students to register for the tour a few weeks before arriving on campus. By registering early, our team is able to personalize the visit to the best of our ability. Please click here to sign up for a tour or call Campus Visitor Center directly at 541-737-2626 or 800-291-4192. The center will email a personalize schedule and a free parking pass before the visit.

With all this great news, what are you waiting for? Sign up for a summer visit now!

Once again, congratulations to all of the newly admitted studentsout there! We are very excited to have you join the Beaver Nation this upcoming Fall 2013! This is just a friendly reminder that if you haven’t already, to confirm your intent to enroll at Oregon State University and then sign up for your incoming student orientation that we call START.

If you haven’t already, you will want to confirm your intent to enroll by paying your $200 Advance Tuition Deposit (ATD). You must pay this before registering for a START program. As of May 1, 2012 your deposit is non-refundable.

After you have completed this, you may now register for your START orientation. START is Oregon State’s new student orientation, advising and registration program for incoming students. START is the first of three steps to making a successful transition into the OSU community. Each START program provides students and their family members with the opportunity to connect with campus resources, meet with an academic advisor, and register for Fall term courses.

Some of you might be thinking though, “What if mysummer schedule is really packed?” Well, we offer several dates throughout the summer for both First Year and Transfer Students to attend. We also offer START on the Road programs in California, Alaska and Hawaii for students who cannot attend the START programs provided on campus. Also, if you cannot attend any of these dates, you can attend START @ CONNECT on September 19th, 2012 on campus.

To learn more about START and to find the program date and location that would work best for you, visit our website at: http://oregonstate.edu/newstudents/start/home .

Registration for START began May 1st for students who have paid their Advanced Tuition Deposit (ATD). To register visit: http://oregonstate.edu/newstudents .
