January 18th, 2011

Saturday was a big day for the Oregon State men’s Basketball team as they took on the University of Southern California. The Beavers pulled out with a win over the Trojans, 80-76, breaking a 3 game losing streak. Sophomore Jared Cunnigham scored a career-high 24 points while Lathen Wallace contributed 12 points. Omari Johnson also has his third double-double of the season and fourth in his career with 12 points and 11 rebounds. OSU lead by 16 points at half time, and was cut to 6 by USC. The Beavers had two big plays and with 3:07 left in the second half, the OSU lead 71-62. After the game, Coach Robinson had this to say bout playing with the lead:

“…our guys did a great job except there was a moment there when we came down with an 11-point lead and we shot a three and we tried a crazy pass and the next thing you know, it’s a six-point game. Fortunately, we made our foul shots and edged it back out, but that just shows you we are still learning how to handle that. It felt good.”

At halftime, the 1980-1981 Oregon State men’s basketball team was honored for the 30 year anniversary of their No.1 national ranking. The Beavs held this ranking for 8 weeks in the United Press International Poll and for 5 weeks in the Associated Press Poll. Winning the Pac-10 conference, the “Orange Express” had a season record of 26 wins and 2 losses.  One notable player from that season was senior center Steve Johnson who earned his second, consecutive All-American honors and averaged 7.7 rebounds and 21 points per game. He still holds an NCAA record of shooting .746 from the field that season. Coach Ralph Miller was named the Associated Press, District 8, and Pac-10 Coach of the Year.
