Bridge to Success Program Follow Up
Posted May 15th, 2008 by JamesSince OSU unveiled its Bridge to Success Program last month we have been receiving great feedback here on the blog and from counselors all over the State of Oregon. Today, the Statesman Journal featured an Op-Ed video narrated by our President, Dr. Ed Ray, that details what the Bridge to Success Program will mean to Oregonians.

OSU deserves a standing ovation for it’s Bridge to Success Program. This is an innovated program that hopefully will be an inspiration for other universities. Way to lead the pack OSU!

It’s great to see a University create real opportunities like this. Everyone in society benefits from a more educated populace, and this will certainly help a number of people afford an education they otherwise might not have realized.

I think it’s unfair that so many financial aid programs are exclusive to in state students. Out or staters pay about three times more every year and it seems like we get little to no help. I don’t see how this is fair at all. Shouldn’t the school be more supportive of people coming from other places?

That’s a good question, Krista.
First of all, OSU offers very generous scholarship programs specifically restricted to out of state students. In fact, the vast majority of students from out of state who are admitted with a 3.0 or higher receive some sort of scholarship.
Second, remember that OSU is a state funded, Land Grant institution. The first mission of a Land Grant school is to take care of our in state students. I feel very safe in saying that whatever state you are coming from has public universities at rates greatly reduced from out of state rates.
The reason out of state rates are so much higher is that in-state students’ parents have been paying taxes that support a subsidy of the actual cost of attendance…Which is what out of state students pay.
We value the perspective that out of state students bring to campus, we LOVE having them here. As I mentioned before, we provide special scholarship programs for them. You just have to remember that there are many missions being carried out at a Land Grant institution, chiefly, to provide equal access for education for our residents.
