RSS Syndication

Posted January 11th, 2006 by Dan

What is RSS Syndication? Simply put, it is an underlying technology of the page you are viewing that allows the content of the page to be utilized by other methods. The feed is just a wrapper for pieces of regularly updated web content including (but not limited to) news articles, web log posts, photo albums, and more types are being integrated all the time.

So what do I do with them? RSS Syndication is most often used to keep track of your favorite web pages for content updates rather than loading web pages individually to check for new content.

How do I do that? You’ll need a method for viewing the feeds. This can be accomplished by installing a feed reading piece of software, usually referred to as a news reader, feed reader, or aggregator. You can avoid installing software by utilizing a web based feed reader. Readers are very easy to configure, and sites that feature RSS feeds will typically have a link or URL to read the feed.

The nice thing about an RSS feed on the OSU Admissions blog is that it allows readers to stay up-to-date with a variety of OSU Admissions topics.

A reader could “feed” several OSU blogs into their feedreader and take OSU information with them on their laptop, pda, or even their cellphone.

We take for granted how easy an RSS syndication makes getting new articles and posts. Built into almost all blogs this is one part of technology many use without thought.

All new content is good to any site whether it is a blog or webmaster input. Good content brings people to the site and helps SEO if that’s what you’re interested in. Who cares what what a spider thinks if a human doesn’t care.

@moin & Jensen – Yes, feedburner is definitely showing you bots hitting your site. When dealing with stats in general I usually discount the first 5 hits and assume they are bots. But of course, search engines hitting your site isn’t a bd thing either.
