Med School facts

January 3rd, 2006

Occasionally, some interesting tidbits of information cross my desk that are of great interest to students, parents, and high school counselors. I’d like to pass along some from our resident expert in medical school applications, Chere Pereira, an advisor in the College of Science here at OSU:

“…always refer them to the College of Science website, where I have puts lots of important reasons to choose OSU for premed studies.

Attached is the most recent version of the “Why choose OSU- I will get that on the web page soon.

The % is always the first question, and is one of the least important reasons to choose a school. Make sure they understand that a lot of factors go in to those numbers, and different schools count their students differently in order to have better numbers. We do have excellent numbers. Last year over 75% of our applicants were accepted, but it varies from year to year.

Nationwide it’s 45%. But we have much more important reasons to choose our school. “

Chere hits on a very good point: everyone wants to boil it down to the numbers, percetages, etc. Fit, ability to obtain research expericence, advising connections, etc., are better reasons to choose a school to prepare one for med school.
