The Student Conduct Committee at Oregon State University is a working group that consists of students, faculty and staff, organized and trained by Student Conduct & Community Standards officials. Students who are interested in serving on this committee may pick up an application at the ASOSU office in 149 Snell Hall/MU East or at the Student Conduct & Community Standards office in 327 Snell Hall.
The Committee has two primary purposes: 1) recommend policies concerning the conduct of students and 2) serve as a review and hearing body which determines whether a student's conduct is in violation of University student conduct regulations or interferes with and obstructs the educational mission and responsibilities of the University.
COMMITTEE JURISDICTION: The Committee reviews, recommends, and endorses current or proposed policy, guidelines, and procedures dealing with student conduct. Such business is routinely brought before the Committee through the Student Conduct Office.
Recommendations of the Committee, upon approval by the Vice Provost for Student Affairs and the President of the University, become policy guidelines for student life regulations and policies and disciplinary actions administered by the Student Conduct Office or academic administrators.
The Committee hears disciplinary cases that have been referred to it by the Conduct Office. All cases that might result in suspension or expulsion from the University are referred to this Committee. The Committee also hears cases as requested by an accused student.
COMMITTEE HEARINGS: A student charged with
unacceptable conduct or breach of University rules or regulations is entitled to a fair hearing in order to determine fact and a University response. The focus of hearings is educational and developmental in nature and related to OSU's mission. Student Conduct hearing procedures are not trials and are not conducted according to the procedures of court law but care is taken to comply with the spirit and intent of due process procedural safeguards. All hearings are closed and information and all supporting information presented is confidential. The Committee adheres to the General Rules of Decorum as outlined in the By-Laws of the Student Conduct Committee. Members are oriented to the By-Laws, procedures, and policies annually.
THE COMMITTEE SUPPORTS A DISCIPLINED COMMUNITY: The Committee is comprised of five student members and five faculty or staff members plus a non-voting representative from the Conduct Office who acts in the capacity of Committee coordinator, investigator, and recorder. Student members serve one academic year. Faculty and staff members serve for three years.
Serving on the Committee is an opportunity to represent students, faculty, and staff in important decisions regarding the standards of the OSU community. Student members applications are available at the Student Involvement information desk in Snell Hall. Completed applications will be reviewed by the ASOSU Director of Committees and forwarded to the Office of Student Conduct for consideration. Faculty and staff apply through Faculty Senate.
