Conditions for Hiring a Temporary Employee
Temporary staff appointments can be used for the purpose of meeting emergency, nonrecurring or short-term workload needs. Employment of a temporary worker, other than to replace a regular employee on leave, cannot exceed the equivalent of six calendar months (1,040 hours) in a twelve month period, beginning with the first day of employment.
Filling Temporary Positions
OSU temporary staff are hired through a non-competitive process by accessing the online recruitment and position description system.
Use of Temporary Agencies
When hiring temporary employees, the university is required to utilize the services of a Qualified Rehabilitation Facility (QRF) in accordance with the provisions of ORSi 279-835 to 279-855 and applicable Administrative Rules. Please contact Employment Services for a list of agencies contracted to provide services for the university.
All temporary agency and non-agency hires are coordinated through the Office of Human Resources.
Academic Wage Employee
The purpose of an academic wage appointmenti is to complete a short-term, non-recurring, non-teaching work assignment, typically lasting 90 calendar days or less. It is appropriate to use this appointment method when:
- The workload is intermittent/sporadic, but ongoing.
- A person is being placed into an "acting" appointment (those positions filled on a temporary basis to replace a regular, unclassified employee on leave). An acting appointment is made using the academic wage appointment process, NOT the regular, unclassified appointment process.
- A current, regular status employee is provided an unclassified developmental opportunity (a temporary job assignment that allows an employee to gain new skills and experience relevant to his/her career goals).
Salary vs. Hourly Academic Wage Pay
An employee on an academic wage appointment may be appointed on an hourly basis, rather than a salary basis (forecast pay) when the hours per week cannot be predicted or will fluctuate, or if the type of work to be conducted dictates hourly employment.
