Applying for Financial Aid…step by step

  1. Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by applying as soon as possible after January 1 on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov, or use the paper application available in all university financial aid offices and most high school counselor offices . Parents and students may estimate their income information as accurately as possible in order to complete the form and submit it by the requested deadline. There is no fee to apply for federal aid.

  2. List Oregon State University as a school that you would like your information to be sent to on the FAFSA. Oregon State's school code is 003210.

  3. If your application for financial aid is received by the central processor before the last day in February, otherwise known as the priority deadline, you will be considered for all funds such as PELL Grant, SEOG, College Work Study, Perkins Loan, and Ford Direct Loans. Applications received after the priority deadline will be considered for aid on a funds available basis.

  4. Make sure you are eligible to receive financial aid. In order to receive federal funding you must:

    • Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen, a national or permanent resident of the U.S. or be in the U.S. for other than a temporary purpose.

    • Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a degree or approved certificate program (e.g., not special admit)
    • Have a valid Social Security number
    • Maintain satisfactory academic progress as defined by Oregon State University
    • Comply with the U.S. Selective Service registration requirements if required. You can register online at www.sss.gov.
    • Be in good standing for any student loan previously received. This also applies to any parent applying for a Federal Parent Loan (PLUS).
    • Be in good standing on any federal grant previously awarded.
  5. Apply for admission to Oregon State University: Apply Online. You will not be considered for any financial aid award, until you have applied to the University.
