Academic Affairs & International Programs

Goals and Metrics

1. Enhance the assessment of educational programs across campus by providing department and faculty development opportunities regarding assessment

Assessment is a critical component of an educational program. The assessment process must demonstrate that the outcomes important to the objectives of the program and to the performance of its students and graduates are being systematically measured and used to enhance the educational programs. As recognized by the 2001- accreditation visit by the Commission on Colleges, Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, many units at OSU have incorporated assessment in their educational programs. The final report of the 2001 accreditation visit however stated that "educational planning (at OSU) is not based consistently on regular and continuous assessment of programs." Our goal is to enable and facilitate "all units on campus...to determine how well they meet their mission of supporting the educational agenda."

Specific goals include:

  • Develop an assessment framework for educational programs
  • Develop minimum assessment standards
  • Identify best assessment practices
  • Integrate assessment in OSU's curriculum processes
  • Facilitate adoption of assessment practices in academic programs

2. Implement a database interface system to enable effective decision making at different administrative levels within OSU

Timely availability of accurate information is imperative for units to effectively plan future goals and strategies. It is also important that a single, reliable database is used for data and results to be consistent over time and across units.

Specific goals include:

  • Perform needs analysis to assess information needs for different levels of OSU's decision making hierarchy
  • Assess usefulness of current reports and other publications
  • Implement a user-oriented data interface system that will allow units to query institutional-level databases

3. Enhance alignment of units within Academic Affairs and International Programs through improved communication, shared decision making, and increased interactions and sharing of ideas and interests.

Other Goals

  • Implement Transitional Learning Communities to increase student retention, persistence, and satisfaction
  • Monitor the implementation of post-tenure guidelines in academic units
  • Work with the Academic Advising Council to enhance the consistency and effectiveness of advising across the university
  • Increase the flexibility and number of courses offerings in Summer Session
  • Complete dual admission agreements with Chemeketa, Lane, Mount Hood and Clackamas community colleges
  • Increase the efficiency and effectiveness of curriculum processes
  • Expand and enhance offerings of the Academic Success course (ALS 116) as a retention strategy and as a support to OSU's effort for compelling learning for students
