Cultivating talent
When Zane Haxton came to OSU in 2007 to pursue post-baccalaureate studies, he needed a waiver to take Temesgen Hailemariam’s course in forest measurements. Because the class combines challenging material with considerable time in the field and the computer lab, Hailemariam wanted to meet Haxton before approving the waiver.
Haxton turned out to be “an outstanding student,” and the two kept in touch, with Hailemariam recommending classes, sharing research and planting the seed for pursuing a master’s degree, which Haxton begins in the fall of 2008.
“When I see talent in a student, I try to cultivate it,” Hailemariam says.
