Brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB)- a new invasive pest

In August, 2004 a single specimen of brown marmorated stink bug was caught in a trap in southeast Portland's Ladd's Addition. Currently it has not been determined if there is a breeding population in Oregon but there is a possibility that there are more of these invasive stink bugs in our area. This stink bug causes plant damage and is also a nuisance pest, invading households during cold weather similar to other insects such as box elder bugs. The following links have more information about this new stink bug. Anyone who thinks they have found additional specimens of the stink bug should contact the Invasive Species Hotline at 1-866-INVADER (1-866-468-2337).

Excellent pictures comparing the BMSB to rough stink bugs, Brochymena quadripustula.

Biology of Halyomorpha halys, The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB): Final Report USDA APHIS CPHST 2004 (one year project)
One of the most comprehensive treatments of the stink bug and its potential impact. The list of host plants should be useful to assess local impact on ornamental species.

Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture's Entomology Circular #204: Brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorph halys (Stal)
Nice photos of damage to Pawlonia, apparently a preferred host plant. Also photos to help differentiate BMSB from a native stink bug species.
