Barypeithes pellucidus Barypeithes pellucidus, sometimes referred to as the juniper root weevil, has been found in the Willamette Valley in several locations. It has been found feeding on strawberry leaves and also girdling christmas tree replants. Although we do not currently have reports of damage on ornamentals, it has been found in container nursery stock. Feeding behavior is different than other root weevil adults. In strawberries the adults feed in the leaf buds. As the leaves unfurl interior holes are evident. There are often matching holes on either side of the midrib. Adults have been found since mid-May, earlier than other common root weevils such as the black vine root weevil, Otiorhynchus sulcatus. |
