Taking an ELI class
OSU students who wish to improve their English language skills can enroll in ELI classes. Classes that may be of interest include University Spoken Communication, Pronunciation Workshop, University Listening and Notetaking, Advanced Grammar, and University Reading and Writing. To see a complete list of ELI classes, follow the curriculum link on the left of this page. For information about how to register for ELI classes without paying additional tuition, contact Marybeth Trevino in the Office of Interntional Student and Faculty Services, 737-6477.
Self-Study
OSU students may also use the ELI Learning Center, which houses a wide variety of self-study material for English language learning. One feature of the Learning Center, the Communication Station, is especially useful for students who wish to work independently to improve their speaking and pronunciation abilities. The ELI Learning Center is located in Education Hall Room 406. There is no charge for OSU students to use the Learning Center.
Student Employment
Each year, a number of OSU students work at the ELI as lab or classroom assistants. Jobs may include checking out materials, working on projects with small groups, or assisting international students with the use of lab programs. Some assistants also receive specialized training and work one-on-one to provide writing and/or pronunciation help. For information contact the ELI Learning Center.
Becoming a Conversant
Many OSU students also take advantage of volunteer opportunities in the ELI Conversant Program. Conversants normally meet one hour per week with an international student to provide English practice and to exchange information about cultures and customs. For more information contact the Conversant Program.
