Stream Monitoring

As part of the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds, we are conducting comprehensive, long-term monitoring of Oregon’s wild salmon populations and their habitat.  This work is vital for evaluating the status of salmon and our watersheds, as well as for creating the ability to document improvements resulting from cooperative restoration efforts.

With six separate projects, operating in eight coastal regions and in the Willamette Valley and Lower Columbia, we have an ongoing and difficult task to maintain good relationships with landowners.  Our approach is to demonstrate a respect for private property combined with a willingness to take the time to explain the purpose of our work.  The understanding and cooperation of landowners is needed to efficiently implement the program – time saved in the process of obtaining access will improve the quality and quantity of effort in the field.  We hope to receive permission from as many landowners as possible and we hope you will choose to participate in these efforts.  By sampling all of the randomly selected sites within an area, we can ensure that sampling will not be biased towards different land ownership or stream types.

Sampling is conducted at sites randomly selected using computer maps of stream size and fish distribution.  The selection method is designed to limit disturbance to landowners by picking the minimum number of sites needed for an accurate analysis.  The information gathered from your stream will be combined with other sites to assess the overall conditions in a large geographic area (for example the North Oregon Coast). Landowner names and addresses are not used in reports or data summaries. The sites will not be evaluated individually, although we would be happy to provide copies of written reports or discuss the results of the surveys with you.
