Reconstructing Community Interactions in Sea Urchins Reserves
By Gabriela Montaņo
ABSTRACT
The objective of this research is to understand the requisites for designing marine reserves for red sea urchins, a commercially important species. Life history information was gathered from sea urchins inhabiting areas where harvest has been well established, areas where harvest has just begun, newly designated marine reserves and established marine reserves. Observations suggested that interactions within the community network differed. Qualitative modeling was conducted to derive plausible scenarios that may explain the observations. Model scenarios were then compared to life history and natural history information. The role of model scenarios with respect to fisheries management of the red sea urchin will be discussed.
