Growth and Competition in the Italian Seafood Chain

By Massimo Spagnolo and Audun Lem

ABSTRACT

The paper analyses the distribution system for seafood in Italy. The authors highlight the growth of modern distribution channels in a context of limited transparency and excessive segmentation. The chain of distribution ( including the role of the wholesale market) is studied in detail, as are the various elements of interaction between the different economic and institutional agents and operators in the chain. The authors present possible scenarios and recommendations for the future evolution in the distribution channels in Italy.
