The Demand for Relaying by the Louisiana Oyster Industry

ABSTRACT
A total of 24.8 million acres of shellfish-growing waters were classified in 21 coastal U.S. states in 1995. About one-third of this total was classified as harvest-limited. Louisiana, the nation's largest producer of oysters, produces from about 10-13 million pounds of oysters annually based on a combination of public-and-lease-based acreage. While much of the leased acreage is harvest-limited, the state allows leasees to transplant oysters from restricted to approved waters upon receiving the necessary permits. This paper examines the demand for relaying activites during the 1975-97 period where demand is measured by the number of
permits authorized. Demand is found to be sensitive to both the output price and input cost as well as availability on public grounds.
