Analysis of Demand for Fish by Species Group: Methodological Framework and Preliminary Estimates from Selected Asian Countries
By Madan Mohan Dey
ABSTRACT
Analysis of demand for fish should be made by fish type or species group, as fish is a heterogeneous product and consumers' behavior may differ by type of product. This paper suggests a multi-stage budgeting framework in analyzing the demand for fish by species group that estimates food demand function in the first stage, fish demand function (as a group) in the second stage, and a system of fish demands by fish species group (or fish type) in the third stage. The paper also reports preliminary estimates of fish demand elasticities by fish type for Bangladesh, People's Republic of China, India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam.
