Quality Initiatives, Fishermen's Income and Fishing Strategy
By Erwan Charles, Jean Pierre Boude and Philippe Paquotte
ABSTRACT
The crisis that occurred in the fishing industry in the early nineties brought about both economic and human tragedies. Drawing conclusions from the crisis the fishing fleets experienced at that time, some producers groups have launched a search for better valorisation of their produce. They have tried to adjust their production better to market demand. That led them to set up quality initiatives (Brittany Quality Sea food, Brittany headland anglers, etc...), which promoted the know-how, the freshness certification, or the improvements inquality of their products.
Based on investigations -185 fishing boat skipper-owners from the Channel ports(from Brest to Boulogne) were surveyed in the first one, 50 skippers
Brittany were surveyed in the second one- this article first analyses how skippers consider valorisation initiatives and whether they are willing to get involved in such approaches. In the second part, the impact these approaches have on fishermen's income is highlighted, based on a cost-benefit analysis analysis. Finally, the article studies how these approaches affect the fishing practises of these fleets i.e. the incentives thus created for them to alter their fishing strategy: to what extent would a better valorisation of production could combine increased revenues for fishermen with better management of fisheries resources ?
