The oneFish Community Directory: Expanding the Boundaries of Fisheries Information Management in the Twenty-first Century.

By Tim Bostock, Joan Baron and Greg Searle

ABSTRACT

The oneFish Community Directory is a Web based knowledge management system encompassing fisheries, aquaculture and related subjects. Its primary aim is to raise the profile of fisheries and aquatic research and reinforce its impact on responsible fisheries. oneFish allows individuals, institutions and networks to contribute information in electronic form to specific subject areas, and to search and retrieve information, files and other linkages. Institutions and groups of individuals can use oneFish to develop discussion groups and create virtual offices; and subject specialist Topic Editors assist in the administration of specialised topics by editing and adding the information submitted to them.

This paper provides an overview of the origins and development of the Support unit for International Fisheries and Aquatic Research (SIFAR) and the role it has played in initiating the design and development of the oneFish Community Directory. The Community Directory Server (CDS) software is described, together with its intended role as a focal point for fisheries research, management and development information in the Twenty-first Century.

The variety of ways in which individual members of the International Institute for Fisheries Economics and Trade (IIFET), as well as IIFET as a network can utilise oneFish to organise, store and disseminate research output, and the ways in which it can address other information and communication needs are explored.
