The Cutters will perform at the brick courtyard outside the OSU bookstore at noon, July 2 as part of the Oregon State University Summer Term Folk and Celtic music series.
This traditional and contemporary-folk family band combines the musical roots of the British Isles with seafaring and North American traditions. They like to "Cutter-ize" familiar songs using energetic performance, driving rhythm, and tight harmonies to give them a fresh sound. They use guitar, banjo, fiddle, bass, bodhran, and Irish whistle to give different variations. The Cutters have earned a wide following in the Northwest and are regulars at the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival. The Cutters carry on the New World tradition of blending musical influences that started with the great cultural melting pot of sailing ships in the 18th and 19th centuries, interweaving timeless British Isles and Maritime songs and tunes with North American music and Caribbean rhythms. Among their musical influences are The Weavers, Pete Seeger, Ian & Sylvia, Dolores Keane, Dick Gaughan, Maddy Prior, The Clancy Brothers, Peter, Paul & Mary, and The Kingston Trio.
The group is particularly adept at three-part harmony singing... bringing to mind groups like the Watersons and the Young Tradition. This is a singing family where each member can take the lead on vocal or on their variety of instruments.
OSU Summer Term presents a FREE Folk/Celtic concert during the noon hour each Wednesday. If it rains, in the OSU Memorial Union Lounge. For more information, contact Dick Thies at 753-8307 or see http://ucs.orst.edu/~thiesr/FolkCelticConcerts.html.
