The rate of natural increase term ("r") can be used to calculate the percentage by which the population will increase each year:
r * 100 = % by which a population will increase each year
You will often see r presented as a percentage, in which case is it properly referred to as the percentage rate of natural increase.
So, for the U.S. in 2008, since "r" = 0.006, our percentage rate of increase is 0.006 * 100 = 0.6%
But remember, in the equation G = r * N, r is NOT a percentage! You'll be off by 100 if you use it as a percentage in this equation...
