What is the AAUP? The American Association of University Professors is the only organization on campus dedicated to protecting faculty interests and rights. The AAUP's primary goal is to allow faculty and their disciplines to develop in a self-directed manner, without interference from administrative, economic, and political biases. This goal is approached by promoting Academic Freedom and Shared Governance, as specified through comprehensive guidelines developed over the last century. When these guidelines are violated, the AAUP works through rational and ethical persuasion to uphold them.

Why should I join the AAUP? Because challenges to academic freedom and shared governance are increasing. Reduced state funding has opened the door to budgeting strategies that often conflict with academic values. Tenure-track positions are being progressively replaced by part-time appointments, and governance structures are becoming more authoritarian. Resources are being redistributed in favor of more lucrative fields, leading to a marginalization of many core disciplinary areas. You may believe that your own discipline and position are safe, but this may not always be case, and other disciplines at OSU are already quite vulnerable. Please help us in supporting higher education.
